Santa Clarita 24 Hour Fitness Survives Mass Closures Amid Bankruptcy Announcement

National gym chain 24 Hour Fitness announced Monday that the company had filed for bankruptcy and the closure of 100 locations nationwide, however, the Santa Clarita location remains on track to reopen in one week.

The announcement came as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced the company to keep its locations shut down for months.

“If it were not for COVID-19 and its devastating effects, we would not be filing for Chapter 11,” said 24 Hour Fitness Chief Executive Officer Tony Ueber in a statement. “With that said, we intend to use the process to strengthen the future of 24 Hour Fitness for our team and club members as well as our stakeholders.”

Alongside the financial announcements, the company also laid out their plan for a phased approach to reopening their locations, including the Santa Clarita club located on Via Princessa.

The Santa Clarita gym has targeted next Monday, June 22 as its reopening date as of Monday.

While the local 24 Hour Fitness location has been spared, 42 of the 100 locations closed were in California.

“The COVID-19 environment has proved that attention to health and fitness are more important now than ever before,” Ueber wrote.

While the company undergoes its reopening and restructuring, 24 Hour Fitness has extended access to all locations and to their fitness streaming services to all members, regardless of membership level.

According to their release, the bankruptcy filing and accompanying financial restructuring are set to give the company the strength and flexibility to “accelerate our business transformation plan, which concludes reinvestment into existing clubs, opening new clubs and introducing several new innovative products and services that will enhance the fitness experience for our club members and guests for many years to come.”
