Tarantula Hawks In Santa Clarita?

Tarantula Hawks are some of the most amazing and fearsome predatory bugs out there. A wasp that seems like it was genetically engineered by a mad scientist, the Tarantula Hawk actually resides in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Cardon Ellis of Unipest says he gets calls semi-frequently from movie sets and large houses along the outskirts of the valley to come remove these super-wasps. Described by Ellis as having shiny black-blue  bodies and large orange wings, Tarantula Hawks are massive, being four to five times the size of a regular wasp.

An expert on all things pest and bug related, Cardon Ellis of Unipest recently sat down with KHTS staff in an interview about common questions and issues in our community here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Capable of incapacitating a fully-grown adult tarantula in hand-to-hand-to-stinger combat, the Tarantula Hawk has a stinger a quarter of an inch thick. Their venom is injected into its prey with eight machine gun-like spasms in the span of one second. Once stunned, the Tarantula Hawk will drag its tarantula prey to its hole where it will implant larva inside the tarantula. The larva will then hatch and proceed to eat the tarantula alive from the inside out as their first source of protein.

Not only dangerous to tarantulas, these wasps-on-steroids also pack a pretty big punch for people. Universally categorized as having the second most painful sting in the world, the Tarantula Hawk is second only to the bullet ant.

  1. Those wasps are not pests, they’re docile towards humans. It’s extremely rare for them to sting. I’ve been around them regularly for 50 years and not once have I been stung or even bothered by one. Killing them is so unnecessary.

    • Completely agree. Article is inaccurate, sensationalistic and misleading, in the name of greed, and using completely misplaced, weapnized fear. Pesticides often used are far more dangerous than tarantula hawks. When I see one I’m always awed by their beauty. What’s next on the hit list, rogue hummingbirds? Oh, and the stinger is Not a quqrter of an inch “thick”, and the wasp lays/injects an egg, not a “larva”.
