Under the new law, California citizens under the age of 21 will not be able to purchase rifles, as well as other types of guns such as shotguns, according to officials.

However, law enforcement, members of the military, and people with hunting licenses are set to be exempt from the new restrictions, according to officials.

California law already prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing a handgun. Only one handgun can be purchased in a 30-day period.

The bill was not the only gun-related item Brown signed Friday.

Brown also signed a bill that would prohibit gun ownership for people who have been hospitalized, or otherwise placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold for risk of hurting themselves or others, at least two time in one year.

The law would allow those people to ask a court every five years to return their guns, according to officials.

Brown also signed a bill that would ban people with certain domestic violence misdemeanors from owning guns for life.

  1. Laws only apply to law abiding citizens. Kids who want to shoot up schools will still find guns. Brown is simply taking another chip off of second amendment rights.
