The Fosters Freeze in Castaic is officially closing at the end of February, ending a more than two-decade run of serving ice cream, burgers and fries to Castaic families.
The Fosters Freeze on Castaic Road is closing at the end of the month, allowing owners Bill and Jean to move on to their next chapter in life – retirement, according to property owner Jeff Preach, head of Terrace Group.
Nearly six years ago, the neighboring 7-Eleven approached Preach to expand its footprint by taking over the current Fosters Freeze building, demolishing its existing building, and adding more gas pumps, according to Preach.
Preach knew if he moved forward with the proposal, it would mean potentially taking an established business away from hard-working people, so he wanted to offer ways to help relocate the family-owned business to a new location.
After much consideration by the Preach family and several talks with the owners of the Castaic Fosters Freeze franchise location on how he could help relocate the family business, the owners decided that instead, they were ready to retire.
Bill and Jean agreed to continue serving the town of Castaic until the project was fully approved by Los Angeles County and the permits to move forward were in hand.
On Monday, Preach said the County approved the plans after a nearly four-year waiting period.
Prior to Monday, various dates were floated for when the beloved Castaic ice cream shop would close.
Now that the official date is known, Castaic residents have less than a month to go get their favorite ice cream treat or meal one last time from the family who tirelessly dedicated 7-day workweeks over the last two decades to serve their community.
Dear Bill, Jean & Family of Fosters Freeze,
It is with a heart full of gratitude & appreciation, that the Preach family along with all of our community, want to thank you for your over 25 years of service to the people of Castaic. Fosters Freeze has been the cornerstone, and mainstay of fast food restaurants in our area. You make the best hamburgers & fries, topped only by your delicious shakes, malts, & sundaes!
Whenever we ask any of our nine grandchildren where they would like to go eat, they always scream, “Fosters!”
Our community is truly going to miss you. We know you are closing your doors in about three weeks; end of February. We hope you enjoy your family and your upcoming retirement!
Lots of love & well wishes — Jeff, Terri & the Preach family
Once Fosters Freeze is closed, 7-Eleven plans to fix up the building and begin moving into their new location.
Preach says the 7-Eleven storefront is not expected to be closed during the move.
