Extremely Quirky Destinations For Santa Clarita Families To Visit – Natural History Museum Of L.A. County

Looking for an educational yet fun time out with family and friends? Well, the Natural History Museum of L.A. County offers just that!

Get ready for an exciting journey with KHTS as we continue our multi-part series, unveiling the most extraordinary and thrilling destinations for Santa Clarita residents to explore on their quirky getaway.

In the 91st part of the series, we will go to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in Los Angeles.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) is a vibrant hub where science, history, and art come together to bring the wonders of the natural world to life.

Located in the heart of Los Angeles, the museum offers an immersive experience for visitors of all ages, blending hands-on exhibits with breathtaking displays and unique programs that highlight the beauty and complexity of our planet’s past and present.

The Nature Lab is one of the museum’s most engaging spaces, inviting visitors to uncover the secrets of Southern California’s urban wildlife.

Visitors learn about the local ecosystems and the unexpected diversity that may be found in the city’s backyard through interactive exhibits. The Nature Lab provides an intimate connection to nature, whether it is by studying how animals adapt to urban settings or learning how to preserve nearby habitats.

The nearby Mammals Hall offers a timeless voyage across several global habitats. The craft of taxidermy and the science of habitat protection are demonstrated through intricate dioramas that immerse visitors in the environments of animals from the Arctic tundra to the African savannah. By fusing fine craftsmanship with a greater comprehension of the interactions between species and their habitats, each display tells a story.

The museum’s Dino Hall is a must-see for anyone fascinated by the giants of the prehistoric era. Featuring over 300 fossils and 20 complete skeletons, including the formidable Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops, the hall brings these ancient creatures to life in vivid detail.

Adjacent to Dino Hall, the Dino Lab offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the museum’s paleontology department, where scientists actively work on fossil preparation and research, giving guests a rare opportunity to witness the ongoing process of discovery.

Beyond the museum walls, the NHM Gardens provide a serene escape into nature. With landscapes designed to showcase California’s native plants alongside exotic specimens, these outdoor spaces are a haven for pollinators and a feast for the senses.

Guests can explore themed gardens, from a butterfly haven to a pollinator-friendly edible garden, offering a peaceful setting to appreciate the interconnectedness of life.

NHM also extends its educational mission online, offering virtual exhibitions and resources that allow people to engage with the museum’s treasures from anywhere. Whether exploring virtual galleries or accessing digital tools for learning, NHM’s online offerings make natural history accessible to all.

Currently, the museum is hosting two shows: Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan and T. REX 3D Film. The photography exhibit captures the beauty, intelligence, and social lives of wolves in breathtaking detail, offering an intimate look at these misunderstood predators. Meanwhile, the T. REX 3D Film immerses audiences in the prehistoric world, bringing the king of dinosaurs to life with cutting-edge visual effects and fascinating scientific insights.

From ancient fossils to modern-day ecosystems, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County offers something for everyone.
