Get ready to experience the magic of a Danish holiday in the charming village of Solvang, California. Solvang’s annual Julefest kicks off on Nov. 29, promising a festive atmosphere filled with holiday cheer, activities for the whole family, and a glimpse into unique Danish traditions.

Recognized as one of the “Most Magical Christmas Towns and Villages Across the World” by Oprah Daily, Solvang offers a month-long celebration through Jan. 5, 2025, that captures the spirit of the season with lights, music, and much more.
The heart of Julefest will be alive with activities every day, from family-friendly gatherings and seasonal shopping to culinary delights and traditional Danish beverages. Visitors can enjoy the rich, joyful atmosphere with friends and loved ones, sharing in the warmth of the season and a hearty “Skål!”
A key highlight of the festival is the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. This sparkling event, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Solvang Park, marks the official start of the holiday season with a dazzling tree lighting.
Festivities include live entertainment, caroling, and an enchanting dance performance around the Solvang Christmas tree. At 6:30 p.m., the park will light up with a captivating light show, setting the tone for a memorable holiday season.
The following day, Saturday, Dec. 7, will feature the Solvang Julefest Parade, where over 400 participants and 50+ contingents will bring the streets alive with holiday spirit. Starting at 11 a.m., the parade will wind through Solvang’s picturesque avenues with a variety of floats, marching bands, and even a chance to meet Mr. Claus himself.
For holiday shoppers and enthusiasts of handmade crafts, the Maker’s Market in Solvang Park on Wednesdays (December 4, 11, and 18) offers a charming experience, reminiscent of European Christmas markets. Running from 3 to 7 p.m., this open-air market features local artisans, crafters, and vendors with unique gifts, holiday treats, and special items for everyone.
Every Saturday in December, the Christmas Matters Holiday Carolers bring classic carols to life in downtown Solvang from 4 to 7 p.m. These roving carolers create an old-world ambiance with their performances, blending festive tunes with the picturesque Danish-inspired backdrop.
For New Year’s Eve, join Solvang’s “Copenhagen Countdown” on Tuesday, Dec. 31. From 2 to 4 p.m., visitors can gather for a European-style celebration as the New Year arrives in Denmark at 3 p.m.
This family-friendly event includes live music and entertainment, providing a unique way to ring in the new year with a European twist.
Rounding out the festivities is the Solvang Christmas Tree Burn on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025. This event is one of the largest fire safety demonstrations on the Central Coast and is overseen by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Taking place at 5 p.m. it symbolizes the closing of Julefest and the start of the New Year with a powerful and visual display.
Throughout Julefest, several ongoing activities add to the holiday atmosphere. Each evening from Nov. 29 through Jan. 5, Solvang Park hosts a Light & Music Show that transforms the park with a dazzling 10-minute display of lights synchronized to music on the hour between 5 and 9 p.m.
Another favorite is the Nisser Adventure, a playful hunt for the mischievous “nisse” gnomes hidden around downtown Solvang. Perfect for families, this citywide search lets participants follow clues to locate these Danish holiday icons scattered throughout town.
Other must-experience activities include Santa’s Village every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas from noon to 4 p.m., where families can visit Santa Claus himself in Solvang Park.
Additionally, two unique tours immerse visitors in Danish culture and holiday traditions: the Solvang Jul Daylight Tours each morning at 10 a.m. and the Solvang Julefest Candlelight Tours offered on select dates from Nov. 30 to Dec. 28.
The candlelight tours provide a memorable way to experience Solvang’s history and holiday spirit, as participants stroll the streets with LED candles while enjoying Christmas carols and stories of Danish customs.
For those who love holiday lights, the Solvang Trolley Christmas Light Tour offers a scenic ride through the sparkling decorations of the Santa Ynez Valley, complete with hot chocolate and holiday cheer. Due to its popularity, reservations are highly recommended for this cozy, seasonal experience.
Solvang’s Julefest is a celebration that invites visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in Danish culture and holiday joy.
