Why go on a regular bike ride when there are a slew of unusual places to visit, such as Tillamook Coast where you can ride a bike on abandoned train tracks, waiting to be discovered?
In the 46th part of a multi-part series, KHTS uncovers unusual destinations Santa Clarita residents can visit for their “quirky” getaway.
This week takes us to the Tillamook Coast in Oregon.
At the Tillamook Coast, recumbent bikes use a non-active railroad to pedal through the coastal countryside.
A new perspective on the coastal landscape, the two-hour, eleven-mile round trip is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.
Beginning in Bay City, you’ll be able to see farms, trestles, fish, cows, horses, and even the Tillamook Creamery from above. Ideal for family gatherings, group activities, birdwatchers, rail aficionados, and wildlife lovers.
On each trip, riders are accompanied by two guides, one at the front and the other at the back of the group.
A person who is able to sit can ride the rails. Thanks to the recumbent bikes’ roomier seats and the fact that the entire party (four people per car) pedals together, the activity becomes more of a team “sport” where everyone may contribute as they can and no one gets left behind.
Therefore, if your group includes young children or those with mobility issues, riding the rails is an excellent choice for an activity.
There are absolutely no age limitations. The business has welcomed both newborns and older adults in the past. Parents can bring their own car seats for infants and toddlers, and the staff will assist in installing them on the train car.
Before heading to the rails, know that whether it is sunny or rainy, all riders will still go out as planned.
Additionally, dress accordingly because there may be times when it is windy and chilly. But remember you will be pedaling, so that can also warm you up.
It is also suggested to wear sunscreen, a hat and to bring water because water is not provided.
After a fun time on the rails, visitors can grab a bite at one of the many local restaurants. Many of the restaurants have boat-to-table and farm-to-table options, offering fresh chowder, oysters, fish and chips, hamburgers and more.
