Extremely Quirky Destinations For SCV Families: The Broad

Santa Clarita families looking to shake up their usual weekend routine may want to head south to downtown Los Angeles and explore The Broad, one of the city’s most distinctive cultural destinations.

The Broad is the latest location featured in the 141st installment of the KHTS “Extremely Quirky Destinations for SCV Families” series.

Known for its expansive collection of contemporary art, the museum showcases works dating from the 1950s to the present while also operating a global lending program for museums and galleries around the world.

The museum’s mission centers on accessibility, education, and engagement. By continually building a dynamic collection that highlights influential contemporary artists,

The Broad aims to challenge, inspire, and deepen public appreciation for modern art through exhibitions and a wide range of public programming.

Even before stepping inside, visitors are met with a work of art in its own right. Designed by world-renowned architectural firm Diller Scofidio and Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, the 120,000-square-foot, $140 million building is instantly recognizable.

Its signature “veil-and-vault” design houses two floors of gallery space and serves as the headquarters for The Broad Art Foundation’s lending library.

The building’s design intentionally blends public exhibition areas with collection storage.

The “vault,” a massive opaque structure suspended within the building, holds artworks not currently on display or on loan. Rather than hiding it from view, architects incorporated viewing windows that allow visitors to glimpse the depth of the collection.

Surrounding the vault is the “veil,” a honeycomb-like exterior that filters natural daylight into the galleries, creating a unique atmosphere from entry to exit.

Among the museum’s most photographed and recognizable exhibitions is Robert Therrien: This Is a Story. On view from November 22, 2025, through April 5, 2026, it is the largest museum exhibition of Therrien’s work to date.

The show features more than 120 pieces spanning five decades and explores the artist’s signature use of scale, memory, and material. From oversized tables, chairs, and dishes to intimate drawings of snowmen, birds, and chapels, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at Therrien’s evolving artistic language.

Several works, including pieces completed shortly before his death in 2019, have never before been shown in a museum setting.

In addition to Therrien’s exhibition, visitors can experience works by some of the most influential artists of the modern era, including Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama’s iconic Infinity Mirror Rooms, and 13 featured works by Roy Lichtenstein, including Purist Still Life (1975) and Female Figure (1979).

Looking ahead, The Broad will debut Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind in spring 2026. Organized in collaboration with Tate Modern in London, the exhibition marks Ono’s first solo museum show in Southern California.

The interactive experience invites visitors to actively participate in works that transform simple actions into messages of peace, reflection, and human connection.

For SCV families seeking an offbeat, thought-provoking outing, The Broad offers a memorable blend of art, architecture, and hands-on cultural exploration just a short drive away.
