A flag ceremony and memorial service for Michael Shepard, the Los Angeles County Fire Department captain who was killed in a traffic collision on the 14 Freeway, are scheduled for Feb. 7 and 8.
Shepard died Jan. 23 when his Jeep collided with a street sweeper near Sand Canyon Road.
The flag ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 7 will be held at Fire Station 132, where Shepard was stationed when he died. The 63-year-old Agua Dulce resident joined the fire department in 2006 as a firefighter.
A memorial service at Real Life Church in Valencia is scheduled for the next day from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Shepard leaves behind his wife, four sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren. Shepard’s wife, Cathy, said she is thankful to those who have reached out to her and her family.
“Mike was a dedicated husband, father and fire captain,” she said in a statement. “He was the source of love, comfort, protection and joy to the entire family. It is with grieving hearts that we have lost him, but we are forever grateful for each minute we spent with him.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
