Crews are still working in Castaic after a large natural gas transmission line explosion earlier, but officials say the situation is now under control.

The explosion on Saturday involved a 34-inch gas line located north of Northlake Hills Elementary School, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Utility officials confirmed the gas line has been mitigated from Saugus to about 30 miles north, helping to significantly reduce any remaining risk.

As conditions improved, shelter-in-place orders were lifted, and Interstate 5 has reopened in both directions, allowing traffic to move normally again through the area. One closure remains in place, however Ridge Route Road is still shut down from just north of the elementary school to Templin Highway while crews continue their work.

Some residents may notice the smell of natural gas lingering in the air. Officials say the odor itself is not harmful and does not pose an immediate danger. 

Los Angeles County Fire Department hazardous materials teams remain on scene and are continuing to monitor air quality as a precaution.

Residents are still being asked to stay away from the immediate area and follow any directions from public safety officials as the response continues.

There have been no reports of injuries, and the cause of the gas line rupture is still under investigation.
