Storm Drops Up To 8.5 Inches Of Rain Across Santa Clarita Valley

A strong winter storm moved through the Santa Clarita Valley this past week, bringing several days of heavy rain, setting rainfall records and leaving the region completely saturated.

The storm arrived Tuesday and persisted through Friday, delivering widespread rain that led to flooded roadways, fast moving creeks and travel delays.

While the rainfall was prolonged, officials say the most significant rainfall was on Christmas Eve.

Rainfall totals across the Santa Clarita Valley:

  • Newhall: 8.50 inches
  • Castaic Junction: 7.25 inches
  • Castaic: 6.47 inches
  • Saugus: 6.11 inches
  • Del Valle: 5.57 inches

The system also produced record rainfall at several locations across Southern California, including Los Angeles International Airport, Burbank, Woodland Hills, Lancaster and Palmdale.

“A lot of rainfall records were set across the area, and it was one of the more impressive storms in my day,” said Rich Thompson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Emergency responders across Los Angeles County remained active throughout the storm rescuing over 100 people on Christmas Eve, washing out roadways and even causing deadly crashes.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is expected to return on New Year’s Eve, continuing into New Year’s Day, with 0.25 to 0.50 inches possible. From New Year’s Eve through Saturday, the Santa Clarita Valley could receive an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain.

“The ground is still saturated, but we shouldn’t expect flooding as significant as the last storm,” Thompson said.

Make sure you double check the weather forecast before driving.
