Greg Laemmle Discusses Old Town Newhall Laemmle Theatre Set To Open Next Year

Greg Laemmle, a third-generation owner of the independent theatre chain, discussed the upcoming Old Town Newhall Laemmle Theatre and the impact on the surrounding community.

Laemmle took over the 70-year-old arthouse cineplex company from his father and plans on keeping the business in the family after a possible sale earlier this year.

“We were looking for a potential partner to get us through a period of drought,” Laemmle said. “But ultimately we decided to not sell.”

The Newhall Laemmle Theatre is currently under construction on the corner of Lyons Avenue and Railroad Avenue in the Old Town Newhall Arts District.

If all goes according to schedule, the new location is expected to open in the first half of 2020.

“This has been a long time coming,” he said. “The community has been very receptive to the theatre, it is looking like we are going to be on schedule, but you know how construction can go.”

The Laemmle Newhall Theatre is set to include seven screens with approximately 500 total seats for moviegoers.

The cineplex is part of a mixed-use project, developed by Serrano Development Group, which is estimated to include approximately 20,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and 46 residential units with subterranean parking.

“The new theatre is going to fit right into the area,” Laemmle said. “Hopefully, the Santa Clarita community benefits.”

The independent theatre encourages regular movie-going by keeping ticket prices low, and providing activities that allow individuals to be immersed into foreign culture beyond cinema, Laemmle said.

Greg is the third generation, following his father Bob who retired in 2004, to head Laemmle Theatres. his grandfather Max Laemmle and great uncle Kurt started the company in 1938 when they took over the operation of two theatres in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

He said he hopes the unique project will become a place for the Santa Clarita Valley community to come together to enjoy art, culture, and entertainment.

“We are working quickly to finish the project,” Laemmle said. “Pretty soon Santa Clarita can enjoy more options for movies.”

  1. Great, more bumper to bumper traffic, as well as Newhall criminals to ruin more hard working taxpayers lives!! Watch your cars, like they do in Leftists San Francisco, etc. We the taxpayers build up, and the lazy, resistant slobs break it down!! More LE with PROPER penalties!!! Stop Prop. 47 & 57 and AB(Liberal) 109 !!!

  2. It’s not like we are not immersed in foreign culture already.

  3. We will be glad to have movies that are truly art; not just animated, action or gory!! Films with substance and great action, not just green screen drivel!

  4. The new Laemmle theatre will bring more culture to Santa Clarita which is a positive thing!

  5. So happy to hear Laemmle, Newhall is still on! Laemmle theaters feature a wide range of offerings including many wonderful films one could never see if it were not for such theaters that are genuinely interested in promoting a higher level of cinematic experience. I have gladly been willing to drive to their Pasadena, North Hollywood, and Encino locations to view exceptional movies in the past and look forward to having a neighborhood Laemmle theater. Also, Laemmle theaters offer a wonderful discount to seniors for Monday thru Friday mid-day showings. Cant wait for the doors to open! WELCOME to our community!!

  6. I was stoked that Laemmle Theatres was coming to Santa Clarita once it was announced. When it was announced that it was going to be at Newhall… I got bummed out. Not a good neighborhood to have a REALLY nice theater at, Santa Clarita.

  7. Don’t go to movies in theaters anymore.
Most of these movies are available via streaming on a big screen.
I don’t see how people can spend $20 to see a movie after they have driven 40 minutes to the theater.

My guess is that the city is going to subsidize these theaters, big time.
Just like the libraries, they will say we will have to accept anyone.
Just another hangout for the homeless drug addicts.

I have the same opinions about libraries. Anything you want to read or see, you can do from home.
It’s this new invention. The INTERNET!

  8. Finally! I have been waiting for far too long for a Laemmle theatre. Welcome to Santa Clarita. This is exactly what our town needs.

  9. I remember going to the Plaza Cinema on Lyons. It closed. I remember going to the Mann Cinemas on Cinema Drive. They closed. I wish the new theater luck . I think they’ll need it.
