The Santa Clarita Planning Commission is set to review Monday a proposal for Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital to add a second inpatient tower to the existing plan, officials said.
The proposed expansion would re-designate a portion of the current hospital complex to allow for the construction of a second inpatient building, a new diagnostics and treatment facility measuring, and an expansion to the existing parking structure, according to the agenda.
If approved, this would be the latest expansion to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, with the first patient tower completed in October 2019.
The project is prompted by a need to bring hospital rooms up to current standards within the existing Main Hospital building, according to the hospital.
“This is a continuation of a process that we started about three years ago, it’s actually two buildings intended to give us flexibility when we’re planning for future services,” said Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.
According to information provided by Henry Mayo, upgrading the existing beds within the main hospital building to meet current and future state licensing codes, as well as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, would result in excessively high costs in trying to work within the confines of the existing space.
Instead, the proposed expansion would allow Henry Mayo to meet these requirements more efficiently, according to the agenda report.
The proposal includes a second inpatient building measuring 115,700 square-feet in floor area and 80 feet in height, the new diagnostics and treatment facility measuring 84,300 square-feet in floor area and 60 feet in height, and an expansion to the existing parking structure that would add 292 new parking spaces.
The planning commission plans to hear staff comments and open the proposal to a public hearing to receive comments from Henry Mayo and concerned residents for future consideration.
