Beleaguered craft retailer JOANN Fabrics announced Wednesday that the chain would be closing 500 of its 800 store catalogue – which includes the Santa Clarita location.
In January, JOANN Fabrics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in just 10 months, leading to Wednesday’s statement of intention to seek court approval to begin closing approximately 500 stores across the nation.
“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve. A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time. Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN,” said a spokesperson for JOANN.
The hearing to approve the motion to allow closures is scheduled for this Friday, Feb. 14.
Unfortunately for Santa Clarita crafters, the location on Carl Boyer Drive was among those on the chopping block.
Subject to court approval, the company expects going-out-of-business sales will begin at these stores on Saturday, Feb. 15, and could continue for several months
Starting in 1943 as single fabric store in Cleveland, Ohio, JOANN has become a prime retailer for sewists, quilters, crocheters, crafters and other creative enthusiasts it has served for more than 80 years.
“Since becoming a private company in April, the Board and management team have continued to execute on top-and bottom-line initiatives to manage costs and drive value,” said Michael Prendergast, Interim Chief Executive Officer of JOANN. “However, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, which, coupled with our current financial position and constrained inventory levels, forced us to take this step. After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths, we have determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business. We hope that this process enables us to find a path that would allow JOANN to continue operating as a going concern.”

“Is Santa Clarita Included?”
YES.
I do not like news articles titles that pose questions. I would prefer only direct facts. That would be news, without questions that may remain unanswered.
