Los Angeles, Orange Counties Providence Hospitals Recognized For Stroke Care

All Providence hospitals in Los Angeles  and Orange Counties have been recognized by the American Heart Association for providing excellent care for stroke patients.

All nine Providence hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties have been recognized for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive high-quality treatment by meeting guidelines recommended by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

“Providence hospitals work as a coordinated stroke network across Southern California to drive the highest quality of care with the latest techniques in treating patients who have suffered stroke,” said Patrice Hallak, the executive director of orthopedics and neuroscience for Providence Southern California. “The results are outstanding outcomes for many patients who in years past may have suffered permanent disability or even death, and today walk out of the hospital within days.”

The following Providence hospitals earned the Stroke GOLD PLUS, Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus and Advanced Therapy awards, according to hospital representatives:

  • Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills
  • Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank
  • Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica
  • Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance
  • Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton
  • Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo

The above campuses are designated as comprehensive stroke centers. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet specific criteria that reduces the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster drug alteplase or advanced treatment to remove the obstruction causing the stroke, officials said.

The following Providence Southern California hospitals with primary stroke centers were also recognized for stroke care, representatives said:

  • Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange earned the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and Stroke Honor Roll Elite
  • Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center earned the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and Stroke Honor Roll
  • Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro earned the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and a place on the Stroke Honor Roll.

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States, officials said.

Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times, according to healthcare representatives.

A Heart Association study shows stroke patients treated at hospitals participating in the national Get With The Guidelines – Stroke program were more likely to be discharged and less likely to die after leaving the hospital than patients in non-participating hospitals, Providence officials said.
