The Newhall division of the California Highway Patrol took home first place Saturday in the “People’s Choice” category at the 2018 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s 14th annual Chili Cook-Off.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic to sample over 25 different varieties of chili.
Each booth was run by different members of law enforcement, and featured their own unique themes ranging from ancient Egypt to Jurassic World.
The CHP Newhall division won first place in the People’s Choice category, which was decided by hundreds of attendees who purchased a taste-testing card and voted for their favorite chili.
There were five other categories for the cook-off. The winners for each are listed below:
- Grandmaster – LASD Homicide Bureau
- Judges Choice First Place – American Legion 309
- Hottest Chili First Place – Inmate Reception Center
- People’s Choice First Place – California Highway Patrol Newhall Division
- Best Theme First Place – North County Correctional Facility
- Most Spirited First Place – CRDF
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station also placed at the event, taking home second place in the Hottest Chili category, according to a Facebook post from Sheriff’s officials.

All proceeds from the cook-off are set to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Santa Clarita & Tri-Valley, who were also present at the event.
