Oakmont of Valencia held two Thanksgiving feasts for its residents last week, and is expecting an increase in the number of people taking tours of the Santa Clarita senior living community during the holiday season.

On Nov. 26, residents and their families were invited to a buffet-style Thanksgiving dinner in both the main and private dining rooms.
Residents and their guests enjoyed turkey and prime rib with all the “fixings,” along with fresh-baked pumpkin pie, apple pie and cheesecake, according to Mary Dembkowski of Oakmont of Valencia.

“It was delicious,” she said. “We so wanted to sit outside — we had our beautiful doors open and we had heaters, but even with that, it was still too chilly.”
Then on Thanksgiving day, residents were again treated to a holiday feast for lunch this time, enabling them to spend dinner at their family’s homes if they wanted.
“If their families maybe are out of town or can’t make it for Thanksgiving, we try to make it so special for them,” Dembkowski said. “We are their extended family too.”
The Friday after Thanksgiving typically has an increase in the number of people interested in touring the Santa Clarita senior living community, according to Dembkowski.
“They’re out and about with their loved one and maybe having that conversation about, ‘Why don’t we take a look at a community,’ because maybe they’re seeing some changes in their loved one that prompts that discussion,” Dembkowski said. “We just encourage people to stop by, keep it very light, but at least take a look at what the options are.”
Dembkowski is expecting the increase in touring to continue through the December holidays and into the new year, as families continue to come together and realize their senior loved ones may need to consider assisted living in Santa Clarita.
“Maybe it’s time to start looking at what those options are, because you never want to wait until there’s a crisis and you’re scrambling,” Dembkowski said. “You want to have a plan.”
