Former Saugus Union School District Governing Board Trustee Rosemarie Koscielny, died on Thursday, Aug. 13, at the age of 74.
Koscielny was born July 8, 1952 and was a resident of Santa Clarita.
She served the children and community of Saugus for more than two decades, retiring from the Saugus School Board in 2016.
She was first elected in 1995 and has served in multiple capacities, including as Board Clerk in 1997, President in 1998, President in 2001, Clerk and President in 2005, President in 2006 and Clerk in 2011.
The Saugus School District and Board of Trustees honored Koscielny for her 20 years of public service when she stepped down from the board in late 2016.
Among those who attended the recognition ceremony for Koscielny in 2016 were then Assemblyman Scott Wilk, Santa Clarita City Councilmember Marsha McLean, a representative for then Congressman Steve Knight, as well as representatives of the Castaic Union, Sulfur Springs Union and Williams S. Hart Union School Districts.
She served as the Santa Clarita Valley School Trustees Association Secretary-Treasurer from 1996-1997, President from 1998-2000 and a member of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association (LACSTA) 1997-1998 and 2001-2001.
Koscielny completed both the California School Boards Association Master of Boardsmanship Program and the Master’s in Governance Program.
Koscielny is a distinguished member of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) Delegate Assembly.
“We were young when she was most active with the board, so I didn’t know how integrated she was with the community,” said LeAnn Trevino, Koscielny’s daughter.
While the passing of her mother is tough, she says it warms her heart to hear from all the teachers and community members her mom had an impact on.
In addition to her busy life serving the Saugus Union School District, Koscielny worked as a nurse at St. Joe’s Hospital, raised her four children and even got to see her two grandchildren grow.
Trevino said Koscielny loved to spend time with her two grandchildren. While her mobility limited what she could do with them, Koscielny loved talking with her grandchildren and hearing their stories.
“She would love hearing them talk about school, and talking about my daughter’s softball games, what plays she made and who was on her team,” Trevino said.
She is survived by her husband, Phil Koscielny and children Josh, Kelly, LeeAnn and their families.
Services to honor her memory will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at Eternal Valley, Chapel of the Oaks with graveside services.
