Offbeat Adventures For Santa Clarita Residents: Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar

Tired of the usual Santa Clarita routine? Shake things up with a one-of-a-kind family outing to the legendary Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar in San Francisco.

Featured as the 117th destination in the KHTS Travel Series, the Tonga Room is a uniquely immersive experience tucked inside the historic Fairmont Hotel. This atmospheric hotspot blends tropical flair with vintage charm, and it’s easy to see why.

Originally designed by a Hollywood set designer, the Tonga Room surrounds guests with theatrical detail.

At its center lies a dramatic lagoon – once the hotel’s indoor swimming pool from the 1920s. Throughout the evening, simulated tropical rainstorms, thunder, and lightning roll through while a live band performs from a floating boat.

The Tonga Room was famously called “the greatest place in the history of the world” by the late Chef Anthony Bourdain—and for good reason. Guests can dine, drink, and even dance on the remains of the S.S. Forester, a schooner that once sailed between San Francisco and the South Sea Islands.

What’s on the menu? Expect a fun mix of Polynesian fusion fare and creative cocktails served in whimsical tiki glasses and faux coconuts.

Food highlights include:

  • Kalua Pork Sliders
  • Coconut Calamari
  • Tonga Pupu Platter
  • Seafood Coconut Curry
  • Tiki Noodles

Drink Highlights:

  • Big Wave Golden Ale
  • Longboard Island Lager
  • Mai Tai 1944
  • Dark n’ Foggy – A twist on the classic Dark n’ Stormy featuring Ron Zacapa Rum, house-blended orgeat, lime juice, and Fentimans ginger beer
  • Tiki Spritz – Choose your flavor: Mommenpop Blood Orange or Ruby Grapefruit, mixed with St. Germain liqueur, Chandon Brut Sparkling Wine, and topped with Fentimans seltzer

Get a taste of the tropics without ever leaving California. For Santa Clarita residents seeking a whimsical, unforgettable night out, the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar is a must-visit.
