Several scouts with the BSA Western Los Angeles County Council placed dozens of flags along Main Street in Newhall Monday in honor of Veterans Day.
A total of 40 flags were placed along Main Street in Old Town Newhall on Monday by scouts with the BSA Western Los Angeles County Council in recognition of Veterans Day.
“It all started with one of our prospective Eagle Scouts,” said Scott Allen, assistant scoutmaster for the troop. “In mid-2012, he petitioned our council to do an Eagle Project.”
Eagle Projects are projects that scouts must organize and complete before being able to achieve the status of Eagle Scout in the BSA organization. At least 100 hours of labor needs to be put into the project, and it also has to “benefit the community for an extended period of time,” according to Allen.
“I guarantee you he put more than 100 hours into this project,” Allen said. “He did a really good job on this.”
Since then the troop, led by Scoutmaster Tom Hezel, has regularly placed the flags along Main Street on four major holidays each year: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day.
“I think it’s important for the boys to understand what were doing,” Allen said. “We’re not just putting flags up there for the sake of beautifying the space. We’re instilling in them a commitment to our county.”
This year, the scouts placed new flags up in Old Town Newhall, as several of the scouts had noticed that the original flags that they had been using were worn and damaged.
After some fundraising, the troop managed to raise over $1,000 for new flags, buying 46 in total so that they would have some spares, according to Allen.
“The boys did a great job,” Allen said. “We teach our kids how to express their commitment to our country, and this is one way it came out.”
