The Santa Clarita City Council plans to discuss significant updates to the Dockweiler Drive Extension Project (S3023) at Tuesday’s meeting, focusing on right-of-way acquisitions and related actions aimed at facilitating the project’s progress.
The initiative includes plans to extend Dockweiler Drive and create a bicycle and pedestrian trail, representing a major investment in infrastructure and community connectivity, according to City documents.
The recommended actions for the council include adopting several resolutions, entering into agreements with property owners and public entities, and approving funding allocations.
Here are the key items on the agenda:
Environmental Impact and Compliance
The Council is scheduled to consider findings related to the Addendum to the Environmental Impact Report for the Dockweiler Drive Extension. Staff has recommended the council confirm the addendum complies with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and related regulations, ensuring the project meets all environmental standards.
Property Acquisitions and Transfers
Several resolutions focus on land exchanges and property rights essential for the project. These include agreements with the County of Los Angeles, private entities, and individuals:
- Resolution Declaring Exempt Surplus Land: This declaration will facilitate the acquisition of right-of-way for the extension project and a proposed bike and pedestrian trail. The resolution will be submitted to the California Department of Housing and Community Development for approval.
- Real Property Transfer Agreements: The council will consider agreements with entities such as Laurene F. Weste and Prostor Land, LLC, to facilitate land exchanges critical to the project.
- Newhall School District Agreement: This agreement will provide for the acquisition of right-of-way for portions of the extension.
Financial Allocations
The council is poised to approve funding totaling approximately $1.6 million to advance the project. This includes:
- $1.1 million to be submitted into escrow for the land exchange agreement with the County of Los Angeles.
- Up to $65,000 in compensation and reimbursement for Laurene F. Weste for relocating infrastructure and facilities impacted by the project.
Infrastructure Enhancements
The proposed project not only extends Dockweiler Drive but also includes provisions for a new bicycle and pedestrian trail, enhancing mobility options for residents. Easements across city-owned parcels are also planned to be granted to support public road and trail use.
Next Steps
The city manager would be authorized to execute agreements and documents subject to the City Attorney’s review if approved. The city clerk would also be authorized to record the approved resolutions upon project completion.
Community Impact
The Dockweiler Drive Extension Project is a cornerstone of Santa Clarita’s efforts to improve traffic flow, expand transportation options, and connect neighborhoods. The proposed trail aligns with the city’s commitment to sustainability and active living.
The public is encouraged to attend the City Council meeting to learn more about these developments and provide input. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Santa Clarita City Hall.
