Dozens of Santa Clarita residents and first responders drove by the home of Adam Woodmansee, a deaf teenager with special needs, to celebrate his 14th birthday while also respecting the social distancing required as part of “Safer at Home” order.
As the social distancing mandated in the Los Angeles County “Safer At Home” order continues to keep people apart, hundreds of Santa Clarita residents continue to find unique ways to come together in order to celebrate the special days of those they love.
Such was the case on Saturday morning, when dozens upon dozens of people took the time out of their day to celebrate the 14th birthday of Adam Woodmansee, a deaf teenager enrolled in special education classes at Rio Norte Junior High.

“Everywhere he goes, he’s just such a joy,” said his adopted mother Cynthia. “Everybody is drawn to him. He’s always been very popular in school, even with the kids that are in the normal classes.”
As the days went by and Adam’s birthday drew closer, Cynthia was disheartened that she could not throw a party for her son, as all of Los Angeles County remains under the stay-at-home order.
“Every day he’s been crossing off on his calendar when his birthday is, and he keeps saying to me, ‘Party? Party?’ And I keep saying, ‘Not this year buddy, we can’t do it,’” Cynthia said. “He did not understand at all.

However, Cynthia’s friend Laurie Ann was not content to let Adam’s special day go by uncelebrated, and took the Santa Clarita Community Facebook page to ask residents to help celebrate.
“Laurie Ann said this would be the next best thing,” Cyntha said. “Do it outside where it’s safe. She really organized the whole thing.”

When Saturday morning came, less than 24 hours after the Safer at Home order was extended for an additional four weeks, dozens of cars, trucks, and even a R.V. drove by Adam’s home near David Way, complete with balloons, bannisters, and gifts.
“The love that the community and his teachers and his family has for him is just amazing,” said Adam’s adopted father Steve. “And a lot of people that came by we don’t know. They heard about it through a friend of ours and they came by. That’s incredible.”
Several units with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station also took time to stop by, along with a fire engine from Los Angeles County Department Fire Station 108.
“That’s when I started crying,” Cynthia said. “They’re the heroes, and for them to take time out and to bring the engine up here for my boy just means the world to me.”
Cyntia described Adam as “the most special boy in the world,” and that he is “the biggest blessing that we’ve been given.”
“He missed the birthday party, but I think this might have been better,” Steve said. “I can tell by his body language and his expression (that) he really loved it.”
