Santa Clarita Cub Scouts Distribute Flags For Fourth Of July

Cub Scout Pack 494 distributed flags in Santa Clarita neighborhoods to celebrate the Fourth of July on Saturday morning.

Walking down sidewalks Canyon Country and Saugus, cub scouts dressed in their uniforms stuck flags into their neighbors front yards, spreading a little patriotism to local neighborhoods.

“We feel it is important that we demonstrate patriotism and our love for our country. So as we observe Independence Day and reflect on the birth of our nation, we want to instill those values in our scouting families,” Cubmaster William Sears said. “Our Cub Scouts are youngsters in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. It’s great to see their pride and enthusiasm as they dress in their scout uniforms and proudly place Old Glory in each neighbor’s yard.”

The pack distributed 400 flags Saturday morning. The gesture did not go unnoticed, with multiple residents coming to their front doors to wave and thank the pack.

“We got a ton of really nice neighbors who either drove by and honked and waved, or who came out and thanked us and wished us a happy Fourth,” said Den Leader Lauren Dilles. “It’s great to see their appreciation for our efforts.”

Pack 494 has been active in Santa Clarita for decades, normally passing out flags to the crowd during the Santa Clarita Independence Day Parade. However, due to restrictions on social gatherings due to the pandemic, the pack came up with the idea of a contactless flag distribution.

“The entire Pack is not able to assemble together as BSA’s (Boy Scouts of America) local council, WLACC (West Los Angeles County Council) issued guidance last week prohibiting any kind of assembly because of increased COVID concerns,” Sears said. “We are doing our project as individual families, each distributing dozens of flags in our neighborhoods.”

Cub scouts participating in this event were Nolan Goedeken (assisted by parent & Den Leader Richard Goedeken), Ben Dilles (assisted by parent & Den Leader Lauren Dilles and sibling Matthew Dilles), Zander Rosen (assisted by parent & Den Leader Melody Rosen and sibling Lily Rosen), Greyson Corriveau (assisted by parents Crysi and Eric Corriveau and siblings Gavin and Elizabeth), Cruz Gonzales Coti (assisted by parent Glenda Coti), Xander Sears (assisted by Boy Scouts [Troop 609] Zachary Sears and Skyler Sears, and parent & Cubmaster William Sears), Xander Rodriguez & James Ellis.
