Santa Clarita JOANN Fabrics Lease To Be Taken Over By Burlington

The Joann Fabrics & Crafts store in Santa Clarita is set to close as part of the company’s nationwide shutdown following its second bankruptcy filing in early 2025.

The Santa Clarita JOANN located at 26583 Carl Boyer Drive is among the 500 stores closing across the U.S., and a handful in the works to be overtaken by Burlington.

Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, has signed an agreement to assume the lease for the Santa Clarita location. The lease transfer is scheduled to take effect on June 1, 2025, with Burlington paying a “cure amount” of $35,041 to finalize the deal, according to reporting by The Real Deal

This transition marks a significant change for local shoppers, as the space shifts from a long-standing destination for fabrics and crafts to a retailer specializing in discounted apparel and home goods. Burlington’s acquisition of this and other former Joann locations is part of its broader expansion strategy amid a challenging retail environment.

The Santa Clarita Joann store remains open during its liquidation sale, offering discounts on remaining inventory. Customers are advised to visit soon, as the store is expected to close permanently by the end of May.

Started in 1943 as a single fabric store in Cleveland, Ohio, JOANN has become a prime retailer for sewists, quilters, crocheters, crafters and other creative enthusiasts it has served for more than 80 years.

“Since becoming a private company in April, the Board and management team have continued to execute on top-and bottom-line initiatives to manage costs and drive value,” said Michael Prendergast, Interim Chief Executive Officer of JOANN. “However, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, which, coupled with our current financial position and constrained inventory levels, forced us to take this step. After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths, we have determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business. We hope that this process enables us to find a path that would allow JOANN to continue operating as a going concern.”
