The Salvation Army celebrated its traditional Donut Day celebration with a competitive eating contest at the Canyon Country Community Center.
Salvation Army’s “Donut Day” goes back decades; during World War I, their “Donut Lassies” fed the delicious pastry to soldiers braving the European fronts.
Then in 1938, they established “Donut Day” as a fundraiser at the height of the Great Depression.

They’ve kept the tradition alive since, and earlier this afternoon, the Santa Clarita branch held its second annual donut eating competition, where competitors stuffed donut holes in their mouth for two minutes, the winners receiving a trophy.

Spectators also had a chance to bet on their favorite donut eater for a chance to win prizes.

The donuts used in the competition, and given out complimentary to visitors, were supplied graciously by Agustin Prieto, owner of California Bakery & Cafe in Canyon Country.
