Santa Clarita Unveils 39th Park At Historic Pioneer Oil Refinery Site

The City of Santa Clarita officially unveiled its 39th park this week with the dedication of the historic Pioneer Oil Refinery Park, transforming a landmark of California’s oil industry into a vibrant public space that blends education, recreation, and history.

Located at 22030 Pioneer Way in Newhall, at the corner of Needham Ranch Parkway and Pioneer Way, the park marks a major milestone in preserving the state’s industrial heritage.

Initially constructed in 1876 by California Star Oil Works, which later became part of Chevron, the Pioneer Oil Refinery is recognized as the world’s oldest surviving oil refinery. It operated until 1888 and stands today as a symbol of innovation and the early days of American oil production.

“This park is more than just a place to relax or stretch your legs; it’s a powerful link between the past and the present,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Bill Miranda. “Visitors alike can connect with a story that helped shape not only our city but the foundation of California’s oil industry.”

The grand opening celebration welcomed community members, city officials, and project partners to honor the completion of a vision years in the making. The dedication ceremony began promptly under the shaded gazebo, which now houses historic photographs of the site dating back nearly 150 years.

“These tanks and the surrounding equipment remained in operation until 1888,” said Mayor Miranda during the event. “By preserving and reimagining this site, we are not only safeguarding a landmark of the American West but creating a place where history can be experienced, shared and enjoyed by everyone.”

Visitors to the park can now explore walking trails that connect to the broader Newhall Pass Open Space, offering scenic views and quiet places for picnics under restored natural shade.

Phase Two of the park’s development will focus on the restoration of the original refinery structures, including stills, condenser pipes, tanks, the pump house, the steam engine, and pumps. Educational signs will accompany each feature to explain its historic function and role in oil production.

Future plans include field trips for elementary school students, reinforcing the park’s mission as a living classroom where young generations can learn about California’s industrial roots in an immersive, hands-on environment.

With its blend of open space, historical preservation, and educational programming, Pioneer Oil Refinery Park now stands as a unique destination for both residents and visitors, reflecting Santa Clarita’s dedication to community, heritage, and forward-thinking urban development.
