Scheduled Maintenance at Castaic Lake to Impact SCV Water Supply; Residents Urged to Conserve Water

SCV Water is urging customers to conserve water  by restricting all outdoor water use during a scheduled maintenance on the facilities at Castaic Lake beginning next week.

The maintenance is scheduled to occur Jan. 6-13, and Jan. 27 – Feb. 2. The maintenance, conducted by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), involves critical repairs to the pipeline infrastructure at Castaic Lake. During this time, DWR will close SCV Water’s connection to the State Water Project, temporarily halting the delivery of imported water.

During the shutdowns, SCV Water will rely exclusively on local groundwater sources and pre-treated imported water stored in reservoirs throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. In preparation, SCV Water is set to “maximize” storage levels to sustain the community through the maintenance periods.

“About half of the SCV’s water supply comes from local groundwater, while the other half is imported from the State Water Project and other sources,” explained Mike Alvord, Director of Operations and Maintenance at SCV Water. “With the Castaic Lake connection offline, the water will remain in the lake, but we won’t have access to it until the maintenance is complete.”

Alvord emphasized that the two-week conservation initiative is a proactive measure to ensure water availability during the disruption and does not indicate any larger issues with the overall water supply.

The scheduled work at Castaic Lake is part of an ongoing effort to maintain and repair vital components of the water conveyance system. This infrastructure channels water from Castaic Lake to SCV Water for treatment and distribution.

While SCV Water is not conducting any repairs during this period, it is coordinating closely with DWR to support the maintenance efforts.

“We encourage our customers to join us in conserving water during these two weeks,” added Alvord. “Simple steps like pausing outdoor watering can make a significant impact on sustaining our community’s water resources.”

The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency is a full-service regional water agency located in the Santa Clarita Valley. SCV Water provides water service to approximately 75,000 business and residential customers. It was formed on January 1, 2018, when local water suppliers combined into one integrated, regional water provider. More information can be found here.
