The celebrations are planned for August 21, 2017, which is being called the Great American Eclipse. The shadow of the moon will travel across the United States in specific places from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic in a display that hasn’t occurred in decades, according to a county news release.

The Old Town Newhall Library will be hosting a viewing open to the public on August 21, 2017. Safety glasses and pinhole projectors will be provided as well as a display of the library’s materials on the sun, moon, stars, and space.

Additionally, the L.A. County Library is set to host a series of events leading up to the eclipse from late July to August 21, at select locations.

Events include astronomy classes (featuring the history of the solar eclipse), space-themed storytimes, art activities, movie nights, and multiple viewing events on August 21, many will include eclipse-safe glasses. There will be guest appearances from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Kidspace Museum’s Discovery Dome.

“This will be a great opportunity for the local community to celebrate science, with fun, hands-on and multimedia activities, culminating in the eclipse event on August 21,” said LA County Library Director, Skye Patrick. “We hope people of all ages and backgrounds will find the solar eclipse to be an experience they will remember the rest of their lives.”

The eclipse programs at LA County Library are free and open to the public during library hours. Those interested in more information on event times and locations, may click here.
