Today In SCV History: February 11, 1970 – Groundbreaking For County Civic Center In Valencia

On Feb. 11, 1970, Los Angeles County 5th District Supervisor Warren M. Dorn broke ground on the County Civic Center, also called the Newhall-Saugus-Valencia Administrative Center.

This project would later become known as the County Civic Center in Valencia.

Planned for the southwest corner of Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway, the development was designed to consolidate a range of county services in one central location for Santa Clarita Valley residents.

Over time, the complex housed the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, which relocated there from San Fernando Road in 1972, along with the Valencia Regional Public Library and the Newhall Municipal Court, later renamed the Santa Clarita Superior Court.

Other county departments, including the tax assessor and probation office, also operated from the site.

The project reflected the region’s rapid growth during that era, as local leaders worked to expand infrastructure and public services to meet increasing demand.

While the Sheriff’s Station moved to a larger facility in 2021, the Civic Center remains a longstanding fixture in the valley, continuing to serve residents through a variety of government and judicial functions.
