On January 24, 1888, Richard E. Nickel, widely regarded as the “Father of Acton,” was officially appointed postmaster of the young settlement.
Nickel had arrived in the area the year before, relocating the former Soledad Post Office from the small mining camp of Ravenna in Soledad Canyon to his newly built general store in Acton.
At the time, Nickel, then 31, was only the community’s second permanent resident, following his father-in-law, German immigrant John F. Duehren.
Richard and his wife, Anna, had moved west from Kansas with their children, Rudolph and Charlotte. Accompanying them were Richard’s two brothers, who also settled in the area.
Nickel quickly became a driving force in Acton’s development. He built the Acton Hotel, launched the area’s first water company and, in 1891, started the Santa Clarita Valley’s first newspaper, the “Acton Rooster.”
Published on the 15th of each month for the next 22 years, the paper kept residents informed about local mining activity, church events, and other community news as the population slowly grew.
