Preschool-Aged Siblings Drown In Pond On Family’s Lake Hughes Property North Of Santa Clarita

Investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau are looking into the deaths of  a 4-year-old brother and 3-year-old sister who were found unresponsive in a pond on their family’s property, just north of Santa Clarita on Monday.

Around 6:55 p.m. Monday, deputies received a report about two critical missing children last seen playing in the yard of their residence on the 43100 block of Lake Hughes Road, in the City of Lake Hughes just north of Santa Clarita, according to Deputy Eva Jimenez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

When deputies arrived at the home, they contacted the mother who had since found her children and began removing the siblings from a duck pond on the property, according to officials.

“The deputies’ observed the children were unresponsive and immediately began CPR,” Jimenez said. “Paramedics arrived at the location and continued lifesaving efforts and the children were airlifted to a nearby hospital where both were subsequently pronounced deceased.”

The boy died at approximately 9 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster, and his sister was pronounced deceased two hours later.

The children, described as a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, were reportedly playing outside, but when their mother called them into the residence for dinner, they were nowhere to be found.

After searching for her children, talking to neighbors and reporting them missing, she located them inside a shallow duck pond on their 12-acre property.

The investigation remains ongoing, however, the incident appears to be a tragic accident.

“Just keep a close eye on your children,” said Lt. Charles Calderaro in an interview with Fox 11. “This was a large 12-acre property. The pond was very shallow, but with small children like that, it can be a matter of seconds.”
