The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved $10 million in funding on Tuesday for a new grant program to help breweries and other small businesses impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The grant is specifically for those breweries or small businesses that have remained closed or restricted by L.A. County health officer orders despite being allowed to open under the State’s health order.
The program was initially requested by fourth district Supervisor Janice Hahn as part of a supplemental coronavirus relief fund spending plan being considered by the Board of Supervisors.
“I have heard from so many local breweries that are struggling to stay in business while following the County’s health order,” said Supervisor Hahn. “With our case numbers on the decline, I am hopeful it will be safe for them to fully reopen soon. But in the meantime, I want to get them the lifeline they need to make it through this crisis.”
The funding for that relief comes from what was allocated to Los Angeles County by the federal government in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).
While geared towards those breweries which have been unable to reopen as a “restaurant” since they serve no food, other types of small businesses which have had to remain closed or faced substantial operating restrictions under county but not state health orders are eligible to apply.
Examples of such businesses include wineries, family entertainment centers, and card rooms.

In Santa Clarita, such relief would likely be a welcome site to many, such as local micro-breweries such as Pocock Brewing Company and Telco Brewery, as well as other businesses like Mountasia Family Fun Center, which recently announced it would be forced to sell after a six-month closure.
More details about how to apply for the grant will be available after the grant program’s passage, according to county officials.

What about small wineries? We deserve a chance at funding and support as well!
Hi Stephen, I think wineries would also qualify since you are also under stricter restricitons in the county than the state.
