$6.6 Million COVID-19 Grant Awarded To Los Angeles County For Public Housing

A $6.6 million grant was awarded to Los Angeles County for housing as part of the federal COVID-19 pandemic response.

On Monday, Ben Carson, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), announced that $472 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding was to go towards helping low-income families “prevent, prepare for and respond to” COVID-19, according to a statement issued by HUD that day.

Carson states that the funding “will provide additional resources to public housing authorities to make sure people have a decent, safe and affordable place to call home”

The funds have been accessed through the CARES Act, which was signed into law by President Trump on March 27. The funding is set to go towards helping families who possess Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV) and Mainstream vouchers better respond to the coronavirus.

Coronavirus-related activities eligible for funding include the purchase of cleaning supplies to maintain the sanitation of HCV units; relocation or transportation of participating families to designated units for testing, hospitalization, or quarantine; provision of childcare for the children of Public Housing Agency (PHA) staff who need care due to the impact of the coronavirus and the provision of additional supportive services that are needed due to the pandemic.

“These new funds are important and will go a long way to help low-income residents secure and retain affordable housing during this unprecedented time,” said Hunter Kurtz, assistant secretary for Public and Indian Housing, in a statement.
