On Wednesday, Larry Kidd, Ph.D., Henry Mayo’s Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, and Bud Lawrence, MD, Medical Director of Henry Mayo’s Emergency Department hosted their regular Facebook Live to discuss how the hospital is handling the outbreak of COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus.

While the pair addressed numerous questions submitted by viewers of previous live streams, Kidd and Lawrence also took time in the beginning of their broadcast to talk about patients who have recovered from COVID-19.

“We’re very pleased to see some of our patients now being able to get back to their homes, and to have seen that they’ve had a good recovery is very exciting,” Kidd said. “The whole team is just really jazzed about seeing that some of these patients improve and be able to leave.”

The staff at Henry Mayo recently celebrated the recovery of 75-year-old coronavirus patient Jim Mastrobuono, who had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks.

“We love to celebrate those kinds of moments,” Lawrence said. “It gives me chills, and (I’m) humbled to be part of a care team.”

While Henry Mayo has confirmed 94 positive cases of COVID-19, only 15 percent of those cases have required hospitalization so far, and 13 of those patients have since been discharged as of Wednesday evening.

“I feel that our care team is doing an outstanding job,” Lawrence said. “We’re not under duress, so we’re able to apply all of our resources in a very meaningful way to really make sure that those patients are getting every bit of care that might improve their outcome.”

The two also discussed the hospitals restricted visitor policy and the hospital’s take on the use of new and emerging treatments for coronavirus patients.
