L.A. County Mask Mandates To Remain In Place As State End Date Approaches

Los Angeles County mask mandates are set to remain in place, awaiting two key guideposts, even as the end of the state guidelines approach later this month.

California’s statewide mask mandates are expected to expire on Tuesday, Feb. 15, however local COVID-19 health orders are still set to take precedence, including in L.A. County.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that there were encouraging signs for indoor unmasking by sometime in spring. In addition to lower case numbers,  hospital admissions for COVID-positive patients in L.A. County have also significantly declined, according to Public Health.
For the week ending Feb. 7, the seven-day average of daily hospital admissions decreased by 111 admissions from the prior week to 310 admissions; this represents a 26% decline in County hospital admissions, officials said.

In order for local indoor masking mandates to be relaxed, experts are looking to two key markers to meet post-surge requirements.

Public Health will consider L.A. County to be “post-surge” when COVID daily hospitalizations drop below 2,500 for seven consecutive days, and has reached “Moderate Transmission” at or below 50 new cases per 100,000 persons in seven consecutive days.

“Post surge does not mean the pandemic is over or that transmission is low or that there will not be additional unpredictable waves of surges in the future that will require integrated public health measures,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. “Rather, post surge acknowledges that we’re stabilizing with consistent declines from the surge peak and it realigns our current public health response to meet current mitigation needs. And with the current levels of transmission, the safest action for all of us is to protect ourselves and our essential workers by layering in protections, which include testing, vaccinations, infection control, and masking.”

Once L.A. County enters post surge, masking will no longer be required in outdoor spaces at outdoor Mega Events or in outdoor spaces at childcare facilities and K-12 schools, according to Public Health.

Another option available that would allow for unmasking, but is not a prerequisite, is for vaccines to be available for children under age five for eight weeks.

Per state regulations, indoor masking at K-12 schools, childcare facilities, youth settings, healthcare settings, correctional facilities, homeless and emergency shelters, and cooling centers is still required.

Additionally, per federal regulations, masking when riding public transit and in transportation is still required.

Employers must also continue to provide high quality and well-fitting masks to workers who are in close contact with others until transmission is lower. Vaccination verification will also continue at mega events and indoor sections of bars, lounges, nightclubs, wineries, breweries, and distilleries.

“Being cautious still makes sense and doing everything we can to drive down the high rate of transmission is an appropriate goal for us to continue to embrace as a community as the steps we’re taking are helping us move in the right direction.”

  1. They won’t end until we the people END THIS NONSENSE by REFUSING TO Wear a face diaper.

I have never worn one. You people need to stand up and STOP allowing “nobody” to tell you to wear a useless, bacteria festering, unproven to stop anything, mask. JUST STOP WEARING THEM!

  2. Control, control, control. While the rest of the state is taking reasonable steps forward our restrictive non-elected official continues to try to be relevant.

No one is listening anymore. The mandates are pointless. Wear a mask if you want to, dont if you dont. 2 years in everyone is more than aware of the risks and can make their own choices.

  3. LosAngeles deserves a medical doctor making the decisions not the lady that is, she’s not a medical doctor. Look her up.

  4. the so-called pandemic has been over for a while now… just look at the stores, no one wears them or has them on their chin. no one is listening or cares about you la county liars…no one believes the government anymore, you lied for 2 years about this crap, either wear one or not, should be how to handle it now. Look at your governor your la mayor the DA and most of Hollywood, and you say we need to continue because you need to meet some criteria.
PRATICE WHAT YOU PREACH YOU LIARS

    • Bobby G it is not a so-called pandemic. It is a pandemic. 5.8 MILLION people have died worldwide, and 918,000 in the U.S.
This has been a real illness with real pain and sorrow for so many.

  5. 50 cases per 100,000 is .0005 which likely will never happen. She is part of the Covid 0 strategy which, because she isn’t a medical doctor, doesn’t understand how pandemic/endemics work. This metric is proof that this is all about keeping people, especially kids masked forever. The head of the teachers union admitted it. Look at CDC’s own data to see how poorly CA performed against all other states despite being the most restricted; https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#compare-trends_newcases There is no interest in scientific data, this is pure gut feel public policy at its worst.

  6. Yeah Barb that’s gonna be a firm no….

  7. Hahah who is still wearing a mask?
    It’s not Halloween.
Unless ur Ferrer. She’s always a terrifying image to behold.

  8. Masks keep your spittle to yourself. All of the comments about Barbara Ferrer’s appearance or the qualifications of various people won’t matter so much when you get sick. It isn’t hard to slip a mask on your face when you enter a store. I thought people were stronger and smarter and certainly more considerate than they apparently are.
I saw 3 teenagers walk into a store today that had a clearly posted sign on the door. One wore a mask, the other two did not. They clearly felt entitled to blatantly not comply with the business’s request to wear a mask.Where did they get this attitude? I think from their parents.
