Public Health Urges Residents To Avoid Gatherings As Coronavirus Cases Rise In L.A. County

Public health officials are urging residents to avoid gathering with those outside their household as coronavirus cases rise in Los Angeles County, officials said.

As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout L.A. County communities, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urges participation with case investigation and contact tracing efforts.

To date, nearly 139,000 people who are or were positive for COVID-19 completed the case investigation interview process. More than 84,000 contacts, or people that were exposed to the virus, were identified, and nearly 61,000 close contacts completed interviews, according to public health.

“Many of us are enjoying the successes of our local basketball and baseball teams, and we have great reasons to celebrate. I want to remind everyone about the importance of celebrating safely,” said Dr. Barbera Ferrer, director of public health. “As we have seen, gatherings, even among people who know each other and are asymptomatic, can result in transmission of COVID-19 and ultimately cause people to become seriously ill. As you celebrate our teams, please do so at home and with people that you live with, or find ways to celebrate virtually with friends and fellow fans. In order to make progress toward more re-openings for schools and businesses, each of us must take action in reducing transmission and moving our community toward recovery and re-opening.”

34 additional Santa Clarita Valley coronavirus cases have been reported which are a part of the total 1,280 new cases on Thursday across Los Angeles County, according to the department.

The Santa Clarita Valley coronavirus total is now 6,344 with the Los Angeles County total reaching 278,665, according to public health.

An additional 21 deaths have been reported Thursday, bringing the cumulative total in L.A. County to 6,726, according to the department.

A total of 2,770,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Thursday, with about 9 percent of those tests returning positive, according to Ferrer.

Although Los Angeles County met the State’s metric thresholds for Tier 2 last month, L.A. County remains in Tier 1 due to the current adjusted daily case rate of 7.3 cases per 100,000 residents.

Per the State guidelines, to move to Tier 2, the County’s case rate needs to be 7 or fewer new cases a day per 100,000 residents for two consecutive weeks. The County’s test positivity rate is 2.9 percent which places the County in Tier 3 for this metric, according to public health.

There are 709 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Thursday and 28 percent of these people are in the ICU.

As of Thursday, a total of 6,344 cumulative cases of COVID-19 and 62 deaths have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 3,712 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 151 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 2,102 in Castaic*
  • 28 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 179 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 48 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 87 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • 14 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • Ten in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • Six in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Seven in unincorporated Sand Canyon

As of Wednesday, Oct. 7, officials had recorded 1355 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 505 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 74 cumulative cases were confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 28 in Agua Dulce.

An update on local numbers is expected later Thursday afternoon.

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Wednesday, Oct. 7, approximately 29.5 percent of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 8,845 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 927 have tested positive, and 17 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are nine patients in the hospital as of Friday, while 273 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

One additional COVID-19 death was confirmed at Henry Mayo Friday, bringing the hospital’s total to 25 and the Santa Clarita Valley’s total to 62, according to public health officials.
