Santa Clarita City Council Votes To Formally Oppose L.A. County’s ‘Safer At Home’ Extension

The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously voted to send a letter formally opposing Los Angeles County’s potential extension to the “Safer at Home” order Tuesday.

The council approved a letter to be sent to officials with L.A. County Public Health and County Supervisors regarding the differences between the greater county and Santa Clarita.

“The County is more restrictive than the state,” said Councilmember Bob Kellar. “We are in a position where we have to line up with the rest of them. I feel that we should write a very strong letter to the county, Barger, and articulate the reasons why the restrictions are over the top.”

During the meeting, councilmembers and the city manager discussed the possibility of the City of Santa Clarita, or a coalition of northern L.A. County cities such as Palmdale and Lancaster, to create a local public health department.

Currently, Santa Clarita is under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

On Tuesday, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health spoke about a possible extension of the “Safer at Home” order until July.

“Dr. Ferrer indicated that there would be a health officer order in place over the next few months while we gradually relax the order,” reads a statement from Public Health. “During this time, we will still move forward with our efforts to ease restrictions aligned with appropriate public health safety protocols. Changes to the order will be continuously considered after reviewing the data every three to four weeks during this time.”

“There are none of us that dont want us to get back to normal,” said Councilmember Laurene Weste. “My husband said he would love to get a simple dinner and see something entertaining. Something more than just me…. It’s hard to be isolated. People want to work but also be safe. The key here is finding a balance.”

One reason for opposing the extension of the safer at home order is loss of revenue by businesses located in Santa Clarita. It was reported that Santa Clarita is in the top 20 cities with the highest unemployment growth in the country.

Others support the extension as they view it as one of the only ways to secure the safety of all residents from the spread of COVID-19.

“The coronavirus is devastating but for someone of my age it is also frightening whether you open everything up, I will not be one of those who gets to go out,” said resident Glo Donnelly in the public comments section. “Unfortunately the Safer at Home order is really important. It means people with underlying conditions, such as me, have the ability to stay home. It’s a double edged sword. All we can do is look to our doctors and scientists.”

Some argue that Santa Clarita’s rate of infection of COVID-19 has flattened out enough that business should be able to return to normal, with responsible precautions such as maintaining face covering and social distancing.

Los Angeles County’s stay-at-home orders will “with all certainty” be extended for the next three months, county Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer stated during a Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

Ferrer said that would only change if there was a “dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand.”

Although the “Safer at Home” order has been extended, certain measures have been eased. On Wednesday, beaches in the county are set to reopen for use, and on Friday the county lifted restrictions on hiking trails, parks and golf courses and allowed curbside pickup at nonessential businesses as the County moves into phase two of reopening, according to Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Santa Clarita City Council Votes To Formally Oppose L.A. County’s ‘Safer At Home’ Extension

  1. Thank you City Council for not just following, but looking at the facts and making a decision based on the facts, not fear. Many of us are grateful.

    • I second that. People have to start taking this serious…not letting them trample all over our freedom and rights. If you are worried your choice is to stay home…let the rest of us get back to living !!!

    • That’s the spirit.i just found out dr Ferrer isn’t a real dr. She has a PhD in social welfare that’s it no background at all in medicine she has no business telling us what to do.check out Larry o’Conner with dr kathy victory on am790kabc

  2. Please let’s fight this extension of the order. Santa Clarita needs to open businesses. We have flattened the curve and believe we all can practice safety. Those residents who are compromised should stay home if they so choose but all should not suffer because others are afraid.

    • Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer! Yes, i have underlined health issues and fear of contracting Coronavirus, and yes, I too would like to go back to “normal”, but if we open completely and the rest of the county doesn’t , we will have a flock of people coming to our town. And, the chances of contracting the virus will increase. Let’s take baby steps and test the waters a toe at a time..we don’t want to drown.

We did have an increase in cases this week, just saying!

      Wishing us all the BEST!

  3. I love this town!!!

  4. I agree with this but the only problem I see is that an influx of people will go to Santa Clarita, seeing as everything is open. Great for businesses but not for lessening the infection rate. Hopefully it works out though if they do oppose this extension.

  5. Thank You city council for showing ignorance and selfishness during this unprecedented time. This is not about living in fear this is about doing what is right and appropriate to keep the community safe and healthy.

    • You are the selfish one, by requiring everyone to stay at home. You or anyone else who is afraid can stay home, you do not have to leave your bed if you do not want to, no one is holding a gun to your head, but those of us who would like can go to restaurants and return to normal.

      • 100%. If you choose to stay home, stay home! Let the others go out and work and save our Communities. Single moms are being devastated. No job, can’t pay rent, kids are home from school and can’t afford child care without a job. Let’s save our Communities… Open back up as safe as possible. But, lets open up!

      • Of course your only concern is whether or not you can go out to eat at restaurants. With little regard to the poor employees who can’t socially distance from the patrons and are going to be dealing with a slew of new guidelines and mandates, which will slow down service. There has already been enough instances of people treating service workers like absolute garbage amidst this pandemic.

        • Well said. Bob Keller is behind this. Your the same idiot who spent over $1,000,000 of our money to remove billboards against our objections. Then after we forced a vote to stop you, you still wanted to go ahead with it. I thought you were done on the council and had some disease that will take you. Please pass quickly you POS.

      • Of course your only concern is that restaurants open up so you can dine in. No thought given to the poor employees who can’t socially distance given the nature of their work, who will be dealing with a slew of new mandates and guidelines, which will slow service immensely. There has already been too many stories of people treating service workers like absolute garbage during this pandemic. But yeah totally you NEED your dining experience, where nothing is going to be the same as before for a long while.

        • No, Lina. Our concern is for the people who own the businesses as well as the people who work there who need a paycheck. You are probably one of the people collecting $1000/week unemployment and don’t want to see that ending any time soon. Of course that is your only concern. No thought given to the people, cities, states and entire country bankrupting, so long as Lina gets to stay home collecting her government checks.

          • Bingo! Linda,

          • You are so wrong Linda. I know a lot of people, including my child that are frontline workers and that is on UI and both are not happy with the situation, this really isn’t the time to be insulting.
Linda i hope you don’t have to experience someone in your family getting sick of this Virus.

Have compassion for those that you know nothing about, at the end we’ll all be fine and alive!

      • There are a lot of people who are asymptomatic. Have patience. Its pretty terrible to not be working. There are other solutions. Not, hiding one’s head in the sand and going out to mortally infect people. 800 cases in SCV, 7 dead. And, it is selfish to want to save lives??!! It may be you or someone you love the next time around. Oh, and the science is pointing to children being infected and survivors having lingering symptoms. Unfortunately the only way to stop the spread is to stay away. Wishful thinking won’t make it go away. You don’t collect anything when you are dead…unless you leave your family with a whopping medical bill.

  6. So we’re going to defy the safer at home order because Laurene Weste’s husband is bored with her? He wants to see something entertaining and be served? This isn’t about the economy or people needing to feed their families. This is just privileged rich folk who are too damn bored to know what to do with themselves to give a damn about the common good. There is no cure and no vaccine. Nothing has changed. If we go back to “normal” too soon, we will see a huge spike in Covid-19 cases and we will all have to go back into quarantine for a hell of a lot longer. Waiting it out a little longer may seem hard, and boring, but people, please, have some common sense.

  7. This is why we love Santa Clarita…one of the few cities that understand the constitution….stay home if you’re sick or vulnerable. No need to quarantine the healthy. This is the most ludicrous thing I’ve seen in my life. What’s next, Newsom/Garcetti gonna start rounding up jews? Unbelievable

    • Seriously? Comparing staying home restrictions to a halocaust? Safer at home means they want to SAVE lives not murder people. It’s ignorant people like you who are one with the sheep.

If numbers of infected and deaths go up will you be one of those many people which better be apologizing to our community? I sure hope so.

    • Please don’t pretend like you understand the constitution. The courts have upheld health mandates. You have no idea what you’re talking about. None of your constitutional rights have been violated. If you think they have, please name them so I can show you you’re clueless

    • Please don’t pretend like you understand the constitution. The courts have upheld health mandates. You have no idea what you’re talking about. None of your constitutional rights have been violated. If you think they have, please name them so I can show you you’re clueless.

And how dare you invoke concentration camps. You’re a digusting, low class moron.

    • My thoughts exactly. Did you guys know that what garcetti is doing has a name besides unconstitutional? It’s called dehumanization. Happened in Germany. Against the Jews It’s called an crime against humanity.
Before I here another person say cif we open up it would be horrible we would see alot more death. Covid 19 has killed less people then flus in the po ast 6 years the state of califirnia alone has seen over 9 I dead in a 40 week flu season. I’ve never been kicked down before.
You cannot let the goverment do risk assessment for your life and if you did I would ask them why I can’t go out because almost 54 percent of the people that have died have been in nursing homes.. the virus was brought into them. The others that died there are several that have been in custody. So our real number is less than a 1000 and less than an average 40 wk flu season. Furthermore if you need help doing math you have a .00025 chance of getting it.

  8. This will go 1 of 2 ways, hopefully it’s the the better of the 2 possibilities. Because if infection does increase and the strains mutate, things may not go as nicely.

  9. I would like to open, but only if people will be smart. Would you give your kid the keys to your car if he/she always drove 100mph and never with a seat belt? I believe that there is a direct correlation between how many people are wearing face masks and how soon the authorities of LA County will give us the green light. They are wise to watch our behavior to see if we know how to properly handle the privilege of freedom. … Let’s open up, but let’s be smart about it.

  10. just remember to get out and get exercise, get some real vitamin d from the sun, touch your feet to the ground, don’t wear your mask in your car, you need to be able to breathe in new oxygen, if you aren’t in a building and not near a lot of people why are you wearing a mask? I don’t mind the stay at home as long as I can do certain things….

  11. We have one (ONE!) hospital in the SCV and are in the top LA County 10 cities with highest infection case count according to LA Times numbers published on Monday May 11.

    I know everyone is bored.
I’ve seen the crowds at Target and Home Depot too.

I’m scared to go out and pick up necessities- I’m also stressed about income and bills.
If things open up, people will get sick. People you know will die.
Please, stay home. Don’t be idiots.

    • Stay home, it’s your choice.

And never call people idiots in public lest you be one.

      Be healthy.

    • There were 19 people in the hospital with Covid? Henry Mayo is going to file bankruptcy after they layoff their employees because they have no work

You understand this right, you’re going to lose your hospital because we’re shutdown

In the meantime the vulnerable can’t get biopsies, CT Scans, cancer or kidney disease diagnosis, we’re going to die too, but that’s okay, no problem there.

      • Yes Dianne so true! Being a employee of Henry Mayo for many years this is the exactly what’s happening. There’s not enough patients, not even at 40% capacity, employees are getting their hours cut or being laid off . The hospital here is not overwhelm whatsoever. We can’t always believe everything the media says

  12. I wish people would take a few minutes and do a little research on “herd immunity “

  13. The arguments that this just affects the vulnerable are naive, as is the statements that only the “fearful” should stay home. This is a pandemic. It can affect anyone and oh guess what? ANYONE can spread it. Stop being selfish. No one likes this. But we have to care about each other and your desire to go out and dine or get a hair cut does not supersede someone else’s right to not die from a disease with no vaccine or cure.

    • Then you stay in your house .. where you’re safe.
Use the pick up service at Walmart. which has always been available. (Pre COVID-19)
We won’t come into contact with you if you’re at home.

    • Dena, Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Stanford med schools said, back in March, that CV-19 would feel like mild flu to most contracting it — if they were even aware they had it. As with all disease, it would be hard on the elderly and infirm.

Collyfornya had it last Holiday Season, as 7500 souls PER DAY streamed here from China. We took it for the flu. So did the doctors and nurses at that time,
And as far as vaccines go, White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci told the senate Tuesday, even once a vaccine to fight the coronavirus is developed, “There’s no guarantee that the vaccine is actually going to be effective.”

  14. 39.5 MILLION people in California…2,802 deaths

10.11 MILLION people in Los Angeles County Proper ….1,613 deaths

In Santa Clarita as of early May they have combined Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley which aren’t even remotely close and this total was 1,154 cases…
    http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/locations.htm

Santa Clarita 326 cases (.15% of total population) with 10 POSSIBLE deaths (.005% of total population)

Numbers don’t lie but when they are ambiguous most definitely do FRIGHTEN THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of people who can’t easily find the facts. Truth has a way of piercing what is meant to keep people in the dark..again NUMBERS DON’T LIE…

Our City Council Members are responding to facts..this is what makes this city one of the best places to live in this country and what does keep us safe. Our elderly couldn’t find a safer and more caring community to live. They’re living good lives and would never require our youth to sacrifice living life by requiring them to be isolated in fear. They are kind and caring and willing to play it safe just like they normally do during any flu season. For even during flu season they know that what same strain of flu might affect one the same strain my not affect another….too many variables to pin point absolutes. Just because they’re elderly doesn’t mean they’re not rational. No grandparent wants to be responsible for their grandchildren to held in endless captivity to lifes many uncertainties.

Let families resume living and providing for their loved ones by returning to work. Fear paralyzes and depression can and does kill.

Wanting to return to normal isnt something people should be shaming others with guilt. This isnt a time to virtue signal who is better or more morale. When parents have to panic as to where the money is going to come to pay for housing and food for their young ones NOBODY has a right to say what they shouldn’t do. We all know we already have a homeless crisis which our state officials invited believing they had a solution. Only if youre willing to open your home to the ones who will lose theirs because of this continued lockdown can you shame these decent people.

Good hearted people see the whole picture not just the themselves in any dilemma. Stinky hearts come in all sizes, shapes and colors and unfortunately they only center life one themselves. All they need is love to heal the hurt they feel inside…people who just don’t know don’t know what they don’t know .. that hurt people hurt people.

    Thank you SCV Council

    • Um. We have over 800 cases. Where did your numbers come from?

      • Cases jumped significantly after expanding realm of original radius of scope- no longer comparing apples to apples then watch footage of inmates purposely infecting one another…it’s exactly what I referenced as ambiguous …comparing apples and oranges aren’t ever going to give clear and concise data ..it’s the dog waging the tail of ‘this and that’ ..a far cry from real science of absolutes

  15. “Some argue that Santa Clarita’s rate of infection of COVID-19 has flattened out enough that business should be able to return to normal” Who is suggesting that? The above graph is fairly clear that this is not that case. Come on! The truth is that is a business-driven decision NOT a COVID-19 based decision.

  16. 39.5 MILLION people California 1,600 deaths

10.11 MILLION people Los Angeles Co proper…1,200 deaths

    189,000 people SCV….10 deaths

All numbers skewed and not easy to find for a reason…numbers don’t lie and only what is ambiguous seeds fear.

    http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/locations.htm

Look up the numbers…more trauma will come of the fear through the ‘what if’ monster. Fear shackles the people who falsely believe ‘risk’ can be equalized among people of every variable. Fear will cause a person who feels they’re being loving into shaming a person who is desperate to house and feed their loved ones…claiming they’re morally superior. Fear does wicked things to good people…its why bad people use it as a tool to divide.

Look at the numbers…love your neighbors enough to settle their nerves with love and facts…
Their is no grandparent alive who would say hold my grandchildren prisoner so I can live…love dies of self..so that others don’t have to live controlled by fear.

Thank you SCV City Council for looking at all of your families and their needs to..to not just attempt to survive but thrive.

    • Your numbers are all wrong we still have a thousand people dying a day in America from this thing don’t be ignorant about it, it’s out there and people are dying from it. It’s not time to completely let your guard down but we can do like south Korea did and strictly enforced the wearing of masks so we do not end up like Italy. Sweden is testing the herd immunity theory so far it is not going good they have a higher death rate per capita than America but they are willing to sacrifice their elders for their experiment. Sacrifice of Americas elders is not the American way we try to save as many Americans as possible.

      • Here-Here, Will! We can toast to that! ?We are being deceived by the numbers they put out! It’s a lot worse than we are told! Turns out, like you say, the masks are more important than originally stated, indeed! Letting our guard down now would be really stupid! Stupid is as stupid does! In other words, a person’s lack of intelligence may be judged by their actions!

  17. Deana is correct. Finally, our elected officials get it….

  18. I’m disappointed in the City Council and their poor decision.

  19. As long as there is a strict mask enforcement for people in public places and at work there should be no reason why we can’t undo the stay at home orders. Restaurants will still have to do curbside pick up and movie theaters will have to wait but everything should open up. CDC is now realizing they screwed up from the beginning some sort of face covering for everyone in public and at work should have been the number one recommendation. They said they didn’t recommend it because they were afraid of masks being bought up leaving our first responders with none. They should have been more clear on that this misleading information about masks caused this uncontrollable outbreak and thousands of deaths.

    • Jay Stallings, your statement about “how soon the authorities of LA County will give us the green light and that they are “wise” to watch our behavior to see if we know how to properly handle the (our) privilege of freedom brings to mind that these are the same folks responsible for our,

ever increasing homelessness problem, floods of illegal aliens, violent criminals and rapists purposely freed from prisons and dumped into the communities, debilitating taxes if you choose to work (free stuff–paid for by these same workers– if you sit at home and do nothing), arbitrary and ridiculous rules, militant restrictions on freedom of speech (basic freedoms that the rest of Americans enjoy every day), wasteful spending (how’s that ‘train to nowhere’ going? …and where’d the money go for it?), and blatantly corrupt leadership, IMO.

  20. We are not the city of LA .. we are the city of Santa Clarita .We are not angelenos and I don’t want my angeleno card .
Thank you mayor Cameron for leading not following mayor garcetti..

  21. Can’t wait to see how many more people get infected

  22. Thank you Santa Clarita!

we need to return to normal, with safety precautions.

The economy is getting destroyed and people’s livelihoods.

    • If you saw the people protesting this, you’d know they have NO interest in doing this responsibly. Hardly any of them wore masks, and they were all standing inches apart, not feet. They can’t be trusted to be responsible. The rate is going to spike for sure.

  23. Great job city council. We appreciate you. This is great because there is many of us that are healthy and need to return to work. The beauty in this is, if your not you can stay home and stay safe. And if you want to go out, you can. True freedom is having that choice. Thank you for fighting for our rights and the ability to make our own decisions…

    • That’s not true. Someone in your household can work in essential business, become ill and pass it to their loved ones who are elderly, immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions. It’s not that simple

      • Jul, it sounds like you have a better grasp/awareness of this issue than most, just a thought, maybe we should shutdown more essential business in order to reduce the possibility of spreading this C19 while expanding the Safer at home policy at the same time,
        Just a thought

  24. Does anyone know how many Government workers — judges, DMV employees, bus drivers, highway patrol, school janitors, etc. — have actually been laid off rather than furloughed WITH PAY? Just wondering…

  25. Trump 2020 still the best choice we have. It’s time to push all the crazy tax loving Dems back in the closet. With that said a strict mask policy for everyone in public places and places of work needs to be put in place by our Mayor.

    • No, that’s where we disagree. I’m sidin’ with Biden in 2020 for sure! It’s the only choice! This President (which is a stretch if you wanna call him that, has lied to us more than all the Presidents combined and then add a lot more), is more incompetent than any other EVER, says the stupidest things every day, ( if you don’t believe me, get the wax outta your ears, and feel free to injest disinfectant yourself to get rid of the Coved19!) ?
The Bozo is the biggest POS our country has ever seen! I prefer a President who is caring, empathetic, and wants to do the RIGHT things FOR the people instead of a self-serving jerk who just wants to screw everyone over and do terrible things TO the people! No question about it, he’s the WORST thing that’s ever happened to our country! Honestly, I hope he gets the Corona virus and dies the most excruciatingly painful death imaginable! Karma is coming for him and it’s gonna be GOOD! Can’t wait to see it happen!

      • Lisa,
Biden, caring, empathetic, huh, somehow, me think you need to get out and gets some AIR and practice some social distancing, couldn’t hurt.

        • Seriously?! He’s KNOWN for that! You need a check-up-from-the-neck-up, and please make sure you stay on your meds! Cockroaches everywhere! We need to step on em all!

      • Sorry but you are brainwashed by our hateful Democrats owned media. If you really think our president was actually suggesting we drink house hold cleaning products you prove my point. He has done us only good so far that is why the hardworking people of America are voting for him. Sorry but America does not need any more freebies from the Democrats paid for by the hard workers taxes.

        • If you really think he was joking about ingesting cleaning products, then you prove MY point! LOL! You’re an idiot and a fool! Then again, everyone around here already knows that! No reason to stoop to your level anymore. Only a retard would seriously believe that! Trump is definitely a moron, and so are you! ?

        • If you think Thump was joking when he said we should ingest cleaning products, you prove MY point! He’s ignorant, and knows nothing about most things in general! Every time he opens his big mouth he shows his ignorance! ….says certain drugs are the ones that will work….. what does he know? LOL! “This will be over soon”, ROFL! Testing is a waste of time! Please! Most people see he’s a fool, and he’s become the laughing stock of the world! They’re laughing but at the same time they’re scared because this fool is trying to ruin everything in our country and his erratic and uneducated idealism could be so harmful not only to us now, but for generations to come! Sad…. But like I always say, if the public lets him get away with his rhetoric, then we deserve what ever happens. Stupid is what stupid does!

      • So… Basically Lisa, your comment “I prefer a President who is caring, empathetic, and wants to do the RIGHT things FOR the people”, only applies to someone you would like for a POTUS… Meanwhile you are acting nasty, vulgar and hateful to your fellow citizens, rather then engaging a mature dialog? I see how that works. smh.

  26. Where were all these stay-at-home people when every flu came around? And where will you be if you win this fight and the new paradigm is to isolate constantly? We, the people, that are fighting to open up, understand the risks(similar to a bad flu season) and also understand the big picture…and that is if you allow big govt to make life changing decisions for you or be harassed or jailed, you will have ruined America, destroyed our constitution and freedoms, and quite possibly assisted in communism or something similar taking its place.

    • Oh my god. Not the flu. Does the flu crystallize your lungs? This is 10 to 20 times deadlier and a flu is usually passed to one other person from an infected person. This 5 to 6. Not to mention, I can get a flu vaccine. It’s that thought process feeding these protests. Have you seen New York, Italy, etc.? More bodies than they know what to do with. Not the flu!!!

  27. There are over 800 cases out here. 50 new a day lately. My daughters work in restaurants. The thought of people being abke to go into those terrifies me. You can’t wear a mask when you eat. A mask is designed to protect the public from the wearer. Anothers person’s mask is not desigbed to protect them from a person not wearing a mask. They have to work. I don’t want them to be exposed in that environment and bring it home to others in my family with health issues. Not too mention, they are showing a lot of serious conditions even in young people and long lasting possibly permanent effects. I find is selfish that people want to endanger my family just to go out and eat, etc. Not too mention, like someone else said, even if people are wearing masks, half aren’t covering their nose, many aren’t at all and are really putting others in jeopardy. We need to wait at least until there are treatments that are proven even if that’s not a vaccine just yet. We need to do this in a way that doesn’t cause a huge increase in infections. 50 new cases a day with a stay at home order in place is too many. Imagine when it’s lifted.

    • Yay!!!! I love our City Council! I am so thankful that we have council members willing to stand up for SCV.

We have all done our part to flatten the curve… now, 2 months later, the numbers are in and the amount of cases we have in SCV is not even a measurable percentage of our population. However, our unemployment numbers are off the chart and will continue to grow.

      Great job SCV council!!

  28. It’s amazing how quick we are to turn on each other. It seems almost impossible for anyone to have a civilized debate without the finger pointing and name calling. Maybe before we comment we should ask ourselves what would Jesus say….and perhaps if our focus wasn’t so me oriented we could then try something that would be fair to all. Provisions have been put in place to avoid evictions. Perhaps what we should take from this is that going forward we all need to have our disaster plan in place for example an emergency fund plan that could cover your expenses for 6 months. Don’t respond with the cost of living is so high that we can’t save. Life is about choices and if you made bad choices that have you in a living from pay check to pay check situation use this as a wake up call. Maybe awesome town isn’t as awesome as it seems. This had nothing to do with political parties. The truth oh the matter is if you live in scv you are probably house poor. The plastic cards will only take you so far. The average job here pays less than $15 an hour. Not to mention the job market here is scarce. Most of the people here work south of scv. Instead of bickering, I choose to accept this much needed vacation…something that most of us need but can never afford to take. So sit back and relax and let’s figure out how we are going to get the concerts in the park back and the concerts at town center and the 4th of July celebrations that are apart of our traditions.

  29. Berta Gonzalez-Harper

Personally I believe many of us had Covid-19 before anyone even knew it was a new virus. I also think staying home for another 3 months is unreasonable and untenable. Older folks like me are probably retired so can stay home if they feel the need to but bankrupting healthy people, delaying children’s education and social development, and demanding that those who have developed immunity remain isolated is insane. If you are afraid whatever your age then stay home but do not impose your fears on others. For the jerk who wished Bob Kellar dead people like you are the problem not part of the solution. I think the City Council is correct in opposing more months of MANDATORY isolation. Many of us are ready to return to living a normal life and cherish our freedom to exercise our RIGHT to free expression, to congregate peacefully, and to pursue happiness. Many folks kept working and are still working so why is it ok to have some folks able to earn a living while preventing others from doing the same. They take precautions so have other folks take precautions too, but let them work to support their families and keep their businesses from going under. My rights do not end where your paranoia begins, stay home if you want but stop demanding that I/we give up our way of life to pacify your fears.

  30. I would like to know how the decision was arrived at to oppose extending the stay at home order. I thought the City Council was supposed to speak for the people of Santa Clarita. Who took a vote?

    • Maybe it was done by mail? you know Newsom style, and possibly there was some ballot harvesting,
FYI, In 2016, then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed a ballot-harvesting provision into law in California, allowing third parties to collect ballots from voters,

  31. The coronavirus is 3-4 times more contagious than the common flu. COVID-19 is 2-3 times more deadly than the flu. We have no vaccine for the coronavirus. We have no treatments for COVID-19. Untill we do, we have to be very, very careful about ending the shelter at home orders and reopening. We have to think about our first responders, our hospital workers, our elderly care workers, our essential business workers, our senior citizens or those with pre-existing conditions. We are deplorably short on personal protective equipment like hospital masks, etc. for nurses and doctors. We also have to make sure that for those who do get very sick and can no longer breath on their own, that we don’t run out of hospital ICU beds or ventilators.

For those who are out of work, they can apply for unemployment so they can continue to shelter at home. Currently, the EDD is adding $600/week to all UI claims. If you qualify for $200 of UI per week, you actually get $800/week. Business owners affected by the shutdown should also apply for UI and for federal and state assistance so they can continue to shelter at home. But we also need to urge our politicians in Washington to extend the federal disaster relief funding at least through December 2020, so people can continue to shelter at home.

As responsible citizens, if we have symptoms, or are positive, we should quarantine at home. If we feel ok but have to leave the house, we need to make sure we wear our masks and keep our social distancing in order to protect others from our coughs, sneezes, and breath in case we are asymptomatic.

Till we have a vaccine, we have to be very, very careful. Both for ourselves, and for our fellow Americans. Be patient, and tell your politicians to keep helping people stay safe at home.

  32. David. Check your facts with the CDC totally false. Ok first the infection rate in you are infected with the flu iif you get it your might infect 11/2 people covid us 2 1/2 and remember Sars which we’ve never been on lockdown for is 3 1/2 you might infect when you get it. Plus the following facts. From the cdcPress releases appear to only matter when they can cause a frenzy.
    Here’s the official update:
    * Ro = 2.5.
This graphic was published over a month ago.
Why did it take the CDC a month to publicly release this information?
    And why do so covertly?
    * NOTHING to indicate that it lives on, or spreads from, surfaces (Testing has now been completed in several reputable labs)
    * NOTHING to indicate any transfer opportunities from an Asymptomatic Carrier:
    You have it.
You don’t know you have it.
You give it to someone else.
    F A L S E
    * NOTHING to indicate that you can be re-infected (testing now completed on the prior suspected reinfections showed the tests hit positive on dead virus because the tests couldn’t distinguish live from dead at that time)
    * The new death rate is .26% (0.0026).
