Third Case Of Coronavirus COVID-19 In Santa Clarita Confirmed

The third case of coronavirus COVID-19 has been confirmed in Santa Clarita, after another positive test at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, officials said.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital initially received their first result indicating a patient tested positive for  COVID-19 on Friday, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

“We had a positive COVID-19 test come back,” Moody said at the time. “We don’t have a COVID-19 patient at the hospital.”

In both instances, the patients were sent home for self-quarantine. Any additional information regarding their location or identity was not made available, as that information falls under privacy law, according to officials.

In cases of coronavirus, if the symptoms do not require hospitalization, the patient is asked to self-quarantine at home, according to Moody.

Henry Mayo has procedures in place to screen patients and visitors who show signs or symptoms of the Coronavirus and who have a history that would indicate they are at risk of the disease, according to the hospital.

If such a person is identified, they would be isolated and evaluated for their eligibility for a Coronavirus test. If they are not deemed eligible to be tested then the person will be sent home with appropriate instructions, according to hospital officials.

If they are deemed eligible to be tested then a test will be administered. If the person tested is not seriously ill, then he or she would be sent home and asked to self-quarantine until the test results come in.

If the test results come back positive and the person is still relatively healthy, then that person would be asked to continue to self-quarantine. If the person is not well enough to go home and requires admission to the hospital, then we will treat them appropriately in an isolated room, according to the hospital.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. It’s out there wash those hands and try not to touch anything. Stay home people no visitors for two weeks.

  2. Welp looks like everyone who went to Costco will be showing symptoms in less than five days, idiots. Hope they are happy now with their stocking up greed

    • What does going to Costco have to do with anything? Why would they be showing symptoms in less than 5 days? Is this just a dig for the hoarders or was there someone identified at Costco as having the virus? This is the way rumors get started.

    • Hahaha Costco and all the greedy ones pushing and shoving, that took more toilet paper and water than needed.
      Plummer’s will be busy soon!

  3. I just went to the park to take a walk in a place where I knew there wouldn’t be people. I just needed to clear my head. I am not ill. I am just trying to stay away from the public as I have two immunocompromised individuals in my household. The amount of people that were out and about at 9 on a Sunday night with this going on baffled me. I know we supposedly have only three confirmed cases, but those are just the confirmed and there are certainly more than that that have just not been tested. There will continue to be more just like in every other area that is dealing with this. We need to be taking stronger measures to stay home unless absolutely necessary. Most people will be okay, but everyone needs to consider the elderly and immunocompromised who may not be if they catch this. Please, especially stay home if you are sick. I have family members who work in food service and delivery. They are not sick either, but I worry about the constant interaction with potentially ill people or carriers. If you are home and sick, please take precautions to keep delivery people that may come to your door safe. Wash your hands, where a mask, do not cough or sneeze in their direction. They are there to help you. It shouldn’t be to their detriment. Let’s all do our part and look out for each other.

    • You were out? And the fact that the first part of your post was an excuse as to why it telling. You are correct we need to adjust our activities. But a walk in the park is allowed.

    • Were you were baffled by people gathering with friends at the park or baffled at the amount of people who may have been just trying to do what you were doing, but with their family? Without knowing what you saw, I’m not sure how to react.

  4. 61 deaths so far and we need to close the country? 13,000 Americans we’re killed by the swine flu in 2009 and did we go crazy then? Over 76,000 fully recovered already, calm down people.

    • Do we want a repeat? I don’t. It’s on a course to do the same thing. You can say that because you weren’t a part of that 13,000. I’m certain the families of the people who have been affected or passed would have a much different opinion. I don’t think it’s panicking to have distancing and ask that everyone watches out for each other, especially because it very obviously affects the elderly or immunocompromised much differently. You will be fine, I will probably be fine, but I have family in very high risk groups, that yes, I worry about.

    • The death rate for CV-19 averages 2%. There are estimates that 100 million people in the U.S. will be exposed to this virus this year. Do the math; it won’t be 13,000.

    • My son and I both got H1N1. We were sick for several weeks. We both have asthma. He was 5 years old at the time. I lost my job because I was so sick and had to stay home with my son. Been raising my kids on my own since 2007. There are more factors at play here than just getting the flu. Not all of us can afford to take two weeks off. Covid 19 is also said to cause permanent lung damage in more severe cases, which would be the elderly, immune compromised, or people like me and my son who catch bronchitis and pneumonia if you look at us cross-eyed. Thankfully I have a job now that allows me to continue working through this and will accommodate working from home if things escalate. My kids are now older and not completely dependent on me if they get sick. But think about those that don’t. Have a heart and think outside your own situation. Stay home if you can and take precautions if you have to go out. It’s as simple as that.

  5. Yes, I drove straight to the park and back home. A total of four cars were in the parking lot including mine and I was the only person out of mine. I was just really surprised by the amount of people at restaurants, movies, the shops or stores that were still open at 8:30-9:00 at night. The areas that are seeing less spread are places where people are avoiding crowds and keeping their distance. I hope that lesson will be learned before the case count gets alarmingly higher. I know you undersrand what I was saying. I am just trying to clarify my version of being out vs. the majority who are out as if nothing is going on.

  6. I’d like to know who keeps tabs on those people who tested positive that they stay self isolated and although they already probably have given the virus to others.

  7. I think it’s only fair to at least know if these people are related, work together or were in another country. We people over 65 are getting more frightened by the day and now we can’t go out.

  8. Are we going to have a drive through testing? That would help l guess to give some peace of mind to people.

    • They talk up a big story…”test! test! test!”…but it’s not being done. ONLY if you meet certain criteria (here we go again).

At the very least, every person who has viral symptoms and a cough, should be tested.

Ideally, EVERYONE should be tested if this is going to be tracked adequately, in order to identify and isolate clusters of the virus that have yet become symptomatic.

  9. So much drama over a virus that kills less people in a day than there are suicides! 1 person every 20 seconds kill themselves every day. 3 people die in 1 minute!!! 180 people every hour!! Do you all see where this is going?!?!? Sure covid-19 is bad. And yes we all should take precautions! But there are other things in this world that kills more people everyday! So let’s just keep it in perspective and stop panicking.

    • Put a penny on the corner of a chessboard…

    • Why is it that everyone is freaking out with this Coronavirus when EVERY YEAR from 12,000 to 60,000 people die from the flu in this country, but that seems like no big deal really to everyone, and 45 MILLION actually get it?! THAT is a REAL pandemic, folks! We’ve never taken measures like this for that! That happens every year like clockwork, but there doesn’t seem to be any rush to come up with a vaccine for that! Come on! So now are we gonna have to deal with the flu AND this every year from now on?! Now THAT SUCKS!

      • Fatality rate for this coronavirus in other countries is 2%-6%, and infection rate is 10 times of common flu virus, which has fatality rate of 0.1%. US CDC estimated fatality rate of this coronavirus in US would be around 1%. The confirmed cases in US since March 9 have increased 30% per day. If not contained or slowed down, the same rate would lead to more than 5 million infected in 30 days, and reach all Americans less than 45 days. The recovery rate is very low and the recovery process is very long. So far, only 11 recovered among 4385 confirmed in US. It was said, unlike flu virus, this virus would not go away. It would come back again whenever recovered persons’ health has an issue. It was also said that the second time it comes back usually would be much more lethal. Many people aged in 20s, 30s, and 40s were dead in other countries. Experience from other countries told us to wear face mask in addition to wash hands is the best preventive action.

      • Here’s a little info for you:
The Ro or transmission rate for the flu is just under 1…in other words, one person with the flu infects less than 1 person on average.
The Ro or transmission rate for COVID-19 is upwards to 7, with some studies showing it to be higher. This means that for every case of COVID-19, the average number of people who will become infected is nearly 7 (possibly more). Put this into your mathematical pipe and smoke it for a few moments..let this sink in.
This is a highly virulent virus, nothing this country or our human physiology has ever seen before. This virus is showing a MUCH higher complication rate than the ‘flu’.
Be concerned. Actually, be VERY concerned about this virus. It. Is. Not. The. Flu.

      • The flu has a flu shot. Yeah, it’s not a 100%, but it can dramaticaaly decrease the severity and length of illness even if its not spot on for strains that year. Many people who die from flu, do not get vaccinated.. There is no vaccine for COVID-19, so you can’t compare it to the flu.

  10. Why aren’t they giving out mask (proper ones,)? Wouldn’t that help to control some of it?

    • Every month front line responders worldwide need 89 million masks according to WHO; so unless you are making this ultimate sacrifice, suck it up and self-isolate.

    • YES IT WOULD. But it seems as though public health officials think we are too dumb to learn how to use a mask properly.
      Surgical mask for the sick

Mask DO work. Appropriate donning and remove of masks is essential.
But I guess they must think we are all too stupid to learn anything new. Poor planning by healthcare officials here have left this country completely vulnerable.
MASKS are a definite component in preventing the spread of COVID 19 since this virus areosolizes and is inhaled easily by others.

  11. It is not drama; this is a real life pandemic. Unless you have an advanced degree in public health, are a medical doctor/nurse, or are a specialist in communicable diseases, you need to keep your irrelevant and misleading opinions to yourself. This virus will not fade away, be prayed away or prove to be a hoax. Community transfer is here and unless and until widespread testing is made available, we cannot know the extent of its spread. Those are the facts. The general public is at risk and the ripple effects of this pandemic has only just begun.

  12. Can we at least be informed what kind of infection for these confirmed cases are?

Yes for privacy, we can’t know who the patients are or where they live. For local economy concerns, we can’t know where they shopped, dined or hoarded.

But at least tell us how the virus infected these people, i.g. person to person or community spread. This is what the county health department is doing [1] so it should be allowed.

  13. Honestly, do the believe these people honestly went home and have had no contact with any others? Especially with how many are not taking any of this seriously and think everyone is just panicking. While they do not seem to think it’s that bad and their get togethers continue people who do have chronic illnesses, elderly are put at huge risk. Why risk it? Then they still need medications, living essentials but scared to leave.
Very rarely…to people sick have the discipline to stay home. Denial, rationalizing, justifying rebelliousness, all those things are going to be what spreads it.

    • Very well said. Like I said earlier, I have 2 immunocompromised individuals in my household and people’s lack of seriousness is very stressful on me and them. People comparing it to other unrealated scenarios is ridiculous, like suicide or other outbreaks. I am fortunate that my family members would not take their own lives. This could do that though and make the decision for them. Please, take this seriously. Like I said most people will be fine, but as those people go about their daily lives as if nothing is going on, they are putting the elderly and people who have compromised immune systems in serious danger.

  14. We still have places open that should not be. Hot Yoga Haven did not close and is running hot sweaty classes still.
Please be careful as we have some businesses not in compliance due to zoning loopholes. The mayor of Santa Clarita is allowing openings here that Garcetti said should be closed. This will spread the virus faster. Take care…GB

    • And what does Garcetti have to do with Santa Clarita exactly? Why would you be listening to outside politicians that have absolutely nothing to do with our city. Please educate yourself before speaking and commenting on so called “county loopholes”.

  15. I am not happy with the lack of information. 3 people diagnosed with COVID in this valley so far…notice how they’ve used the EXACT SAME ARTICLE FOR ALL OF THEM?

NOTHING about contact tracing. You know why that is? Because they are not doing contact tracing.
Any of us could have been exposed to any one of them.

No, I don’t want to know their names or violate their privacy, but we need MORE information about where these patients have been and who may have been in contact with them and subsequently exposed to the virus.

Public officials think we are a bunch of idiots who can’t “handle the truth”. So they keep us in the dark.
Cut the crap out and give it to us straight.

  16. And one more thing… I would like to have more information, thank you very much. We ALL deserve more information.

I have asthma and almost died from septic pneumonia in 2008. I am appalled how this virus has been downplayed and hush-hushed.

Absolutely no public service announcements from our officials here in SCV. Just crickets.

  17. I think Italy had about 300 death in one city over a 24 hour period. It sure Sounds serious

  18. I see statements like “13,000 Americans we’re killed by the swine flu in 2009 and did we go crazy then? ” all the time. I say, had they taken it more seriously and yes, maybe a little panic, the 13000 may have been 1300. I am not a panicker but, more realist. Stopping a spread will let it die out. It’s only a temorary social situation. Toilet paper and water will be available when you need it.

  19. Is KHTS still in business? No value, no information?
