Assault With Deadly Weapon Suspect Detained At Gunpoint With Help From Santa Clarita Journalist

An assault with a deadly weapon suspect, who had allegedly “threatened a person with a knife” Saturday, was detained at gunpoint after local journalist Austin Dave “stopped” the man who was fleeing from deputies on foot in Santa Clarita.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, deputies received reports of an assault with a deadly weapon near the intersection of 14th Street and Walnut Street in Newhall, according to Lt. Mike Marion with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“We responded to 14th Street and Walnut Street regarding a person who brandished a knife and attempted to assault someone with a knife,” Marion said.

The assault suspect, who fled on foot southbound towards 14th Street and Railroad Avenue, “tripped” as he ran from deputies, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“There was a journalist on scene who stopped the suspect from fleeing deputies,” Marion said.

The assault suspect was detained at gunpoint by deputies in the Newhall area and arrested for assault with a deadly weapon around 7 p.m., according to Marion.

The suspect is also being investigated in relation to a robbery that occurred earlier in the day near Dooly’s Liquor & Market on the 22500 block of 14th Street, according to officials.

The robbery suspect managed to flee the scene after threatening a victim with a steel pipe, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“The two crimes are still under investigation,” Marion said. “We are working to determine whether these two incidents are related.

No injuries have been reported.
