Axe-Wielding Santa Clarita Road Rage Suspect Arrested

A Tujunga man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly threatened another person with an axe during a road rage incident last week in Santa Clarita.

Around 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a report of a road rage incident on the 14 Freeway near Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“The suspect,… exited his vehicle and approached the victim while wielding an axe,” Burgos-Lopez said.

The victim, fearing for their safety, immediately called 911, according to officials.

By the time CHP officers arrived on scene, the suspect had fled the area.

After conducting an extensive investigation, CHP officers located the suspect’s vehicle on the 6500 block of Foothill Boulevard on March 5, at approximately 10 a.m., Burgos-Lopez said.

A CHP unit assisting in the investigation conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by Richard Garth Ogden Jr., 60, from Tujunga, who was arrested at the scene for felony assault with a deadly weapon, according to officials.

During the arrest, officers recovered an axe from Ogden’s vehicle.

“Our officers are working diligently to ensure the safety of all motorists on California roadways,” said CHP Newhall Area Captain Krusey.  “The Department is committed to taking swift and effective action against individuals who engage in violent behavior on our highways.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
