Canyon Country Man Arrested For Felony DUI After 14 Freeway Traffic Stop

A Canyon Country man with multiple driving under the influence charges was arrested for felony DUI Saturday after he was allegedly found driving at a high rate of speed on the 14 Freeway.

Around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, an officer with the California Highway Patrol, (CHP) Newhall Area Office observed a Cadillac sedan traveling at a high rate of speed on southbound 14 Freeway, north of the 5 Freeway interchange, said Officer Josh Greengard, a spokesperson for the Office.

“The officer stopped the vehicle and observed signs and symptoms of DUI,” Greengard said.

Christopher Basillo, 26, from Canyon Country was charged with felon DUI due to the Canyon Country man having multiple past prior convictions, according to Greengard.

A driver can be charged with a felony DUI if they injure someone other than themselves in a crash, or if they are arrested for four or more DUIs within a 10-year span, according to Greengard in a previous KHTS article.

Basillo was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station with bail set at $100,000, according to arrest logs.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
