Snyder was held to answer to a seven-count felony complaint, alleging misappropriation of public funds by a public officer, embezzlement by a public officer and grand theft by embezzlement, which reportedly totaled more than $15,000 in losses for the district, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Snyder pleaded not guilty to the charges in June 2015. He’s being represented by Carl Douglas, who gained fame as one of O.J. Simpson’s attorney during the star’s infamous 1994 murder trial, and Aja Mann, an attorney with the Douglas Hicks Law firm.
A pretrial conference is scheduled for Thursday, when the case and trial schedule will be discussed.
Mann issued a statement before the trial that seemed to indicate Snyder did not plan to settle for a plea deal.
“We are confident that once a fair-minded jury has an opportunity to listen to all of the facts of this case, they will agree that this entire prosecution is a miscarriage of justice,” Mann said.
The case is being prosecuted by Anna Lopez. She referred all media requests to the media relations office.
In March 2014, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Fraud & Cyber Crimes Bureau initiated an investigation based on the findings of the William S. Hart School District’s audit, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. The alleged crimes took place from 2008-14, officials said.
During the 10-month investigation, evidence was gathered that showed Snyder was submitting fraudulent reimbursement forms to Valencia High School ASB, officials stated.
Snyder was placed on leave in March 2014, and later replaced by Michael Killinger, who’s currently the head coach.
Snyder coached the program from 1998 to 2014. Mike Killinger, a former assistant of Snyder’s, was hired as head baseball coach in May. 2014.
