Rather than simply keeping residents entertained throughout the day, Activities Director Christi Rose strives to create programming that boost residents’ overall wellbeing.

For example, a former Navy Seal leads a regular model building class for the community’s veterans that not only keeps their minds healthy, but also helps participants connect spiritually.

“It’s good for your mind because you’re using those fine motor skills, but also they’re sharing war stories and talking about their experiences and connecting,” Rose said. “That’s really important for men, because sometimes they can’t just sit, necessarily, over a cup of coffee and chat. Sometimes they have to be doing something with their hands.”

Another activity designed to address residents’ souls is Summerhill Villa’s volunteer programming, which ranges from residents crocheting and knitting blankets for hospitals and soldiers overseas to collecting donations for food pantries.

“We want our residents to have the satisfaction of giving, because they’re the recipient right now in that stage of life– they’re receiving care and a lot of things from us,” Rose explained. “There is just something unique about having that feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction of giving back to others.”

On a weekly basis, residents are treated to live musical entertainment, from country to opera to local student choirs.

Residents are also set to experience the world of virtual reality for the first time next month, where they will have the chance to be transported to another place — like a jungle or mountaintop — through state-of-the-art technology.

“They want to know what the generation today is doing for fun, and they want to keep on top of technology,” Rose said. “We do that, we bring things that are state of the art in and let them experience it so they can talk about it with their grandkids and have fun.”

She continued, “We’re not just playing bingo and blackjack every day just trying to keep people entertained. We are trying to keep them healthy with their mind, their body and their soul, and so our activity program addresses all those things.”
