Deputies Arrest Eight In ‘Operation Safe Shop’

Eight individuals were arrested in a “safe shopping” operation conducted by deputies and detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, officials said.

On Saturday, deputies and detectives teamed for the operation at Westfield Valencia Town Center, which was aimed at safety around retail establishments.

“Deputies and detectives, some uniformed and others in civilian attire, not only watched for shoplifters, but also kept a watchful eye for anyone suspicious in the parking areas surrounding the over 200 stores housed in the mall,” wrote Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, in an official post Monday.

Detective David O’Brien from the station’s Burglary Team organized the “special enforcement” operation, according to officials.

By 10 p.m., seven of the eight individuals that were arrested had reportedly been taken into custody, ranging in age from 16 to 49 years old.

“The juvenile, 16, was detained for possession of metal knuckles and drinking in public,” Miller wrote. “Two adults were arrested for probation violations. One adult was arrested on over $200,000 in warrants.”

Other arrests included warrants, narcotics charges and vehicle code violations, such as driving recklessly, Miller added.

Officials from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station aim to ensure the safety of shoppers and look to provide a secure work environment by detecting illegal activities, according to officials.
