The suspect reportedly got into an argument with an ex-girlfriend over a common child around 3 p.m. Tuesday, and the woman told authorities he was in possession of a handgun, said Sgt Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The incident occurred on the 18000 block of Jakes Way in Canyon Country.

“I don’t know to what degree the argument escalated, but she said that he has a handgun,” Allen said. “There’s word that he is a parolee at large, and they’re out there looking for him right now.”

Deputies quickly set up a containment outside Sierra Canyon Apartments on Sierra Highway just south of Soledad Canyon Road, where they initially believed the suspect went following the dispute.

However, the containment was broken down around 4:45 p.m. when deputies realized the suspect was not inside.

“After a little more investigation, deputies formed the opinion that the individual inside this apartment is not the suspect we’re looking for, so they went ahead and broke down their containment,” Allen said. “The original person we’re looking for is still at large.”

At least one person was detained by deputies at the scene of the apartment building. Their connection to the suspect, if any, is currently unknown.

The suspect was only described by authorities as a male black adult.

No new information was available Tuesday around 9 p.m. A full description of the suspect is not being released at this time.
