Detectives Investigating Swatting Call In Castaic

Detectives are investigating a Castaic swatting incident after receiving reports of a family allegedly being shot.

Just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, deputies received reports of a shooting in the 27000 block of Hartford Avenue in Castaic, said Lt. Molina, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The caller, who stated they were from a veterans service hotline, told deputies a man who was under the influence had several firearms and shot family members, according to Molina.

“Deputies responded and they confirmed it was a swatting,” Molina said.

Swatting is when a fake 911 call is made from a person out of state, and sometimes of the country reporting a fake crime to an unsuspecting home.

As of Thursday, detectives do not know where the false phone call was made, and the phone number was not registered, according to officials.

Detectives now are investigating the call, and will compare data with different police agencies across the nation to see if any other suspicious phone calls of the same type were made.

Through their investigation, they are hoping they can eventually track the call back to an IP address and locate the suspect making false 9-1-1 calls.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
