The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office is warning Santa Clarita residents to beware of charity scams set to take advantage of the season of giving, officials said.
Deputy District Attorney Benyomin Forer explains how the scam works in a video released by the D.A.’s office.
“The con artists might try and make everything look legitimate to collect donations, but in the end pocket all the money for themselves with no intention of supporting the cause they’re sponsoring,” said Forer in the video.
When donating to a charity, make sure the money is going to the right cause and not into a crook’s pocket.
In the Charity Scam, con artists prey on people who are generous with their money and are looking to contribute to an organization.
So-called charities that are actually run by fraudsters may pop up after a natural disaster or during the holidays.
TIPS:
- Do research; reputable charities tell how money is spent and if the donation is tax-deductible.
- Do not respond to emails or cold calls asking for contributions.
- Do not give cash donations.
