Santa Clarita Veteran Family Awarded $500,000 Home

A Santa Clarita Veteran and his family were awarded a home valued at $500,000 by an anonymous donor through the Santa Clarita Veteran Services Collaborative, officials said Friday.

The Selection and Interview Committees of the Santa Clarita Veteran Services Collaborative, operating under the guidelines set forth by an anonymous Santa Clarita donor awarded a veteran family with a home, according to officials.

After reviewing and scoring more than 40 applications, the organization has  chosen veteran Ernesto Trevizo, his wife Alyssa, and their two children, Sonny and Zachary, as the recipients of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, according to officials.

The Selection Committee narrowed the field to ten families, and from that group, five finalists were chosen to participate in personal interviews, according to officials.

All five members of the Interview Committee agreed that narrowing the field down to one family was “extremely” difficult since each of the finalists’ personal stories are very emotional and each was deemed worthy of being given the home, according to officials.

As a follow-up, the Collaborative is set to work with the other finalists to assist in making sure that other options can be considered.

“We also wish to thank the many community members who have contributed furniture and household items to enhance this amazing gift,” reads a statement from the Santa Clarita Veteran Services Collaborative Friday.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
