Deputies arrested a Canyon Country man and charged him with a felony for allegedly being in possession of a concealed knife after he was under investigation for public intoxication, officials said.

On Monday around 1 a.m., deputies were patrolling on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country when they observed a male adult reportedly staggering towards the street from the sidewalk, said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Deputies pulled over to check on the man’s welfare,” Miller said.

Upon making contact with the man, deputies immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the man’s breath, and noticed he was slurring his words, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“While detaining the man for a drunk in public investigation, deputies found the man to have a knife concealed on his person,” Miller said.

Maurilio Mondragon, 36, of Canyon Country, was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a concealed dirk or dagger, Miller said.

Mondragon was arrested and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with bail set at $20,000, according to arrest records.
