DUI, Drug-Related Crimes Dominate Santa Clarita Memorial Weekend Arrests

Twenty-seven arrests were reported in Santa Clarita over Memorial Day weekend, with a majority made for driving under the influence and drug-related crimes.

Between May 27 and May 30, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office arrested 27 people, an increase from last weekend’s 20, according to booking logs.

Eleven of the reported 27 bookings came as a result of DUI crimes with prior convictions, in which each suspect was booked in lieu of $5,000 bail, according to arrest records.

“The CHP’s Memorial Day Maximum Enforcement Period is underway and 241 arrests have been made for DUI and three people have died on our roadways since 6 p.m. Friday,” read a statement from CHP reference arrest made through out the state..

Three additional alcohol and drug-related arrests had been made over Memorial Day weekend, in which three men were held at $0 bail and released on citations soon after their individual arrests.

Two domestic-related arrests were also made over the weekend including a woman who has been charged with battery against a former spouse and a man who allegedly inflicted corporal injury on a spouse and or cohabitant, according to booking logs.

With more than 19 arrestees released on citation with bails set between $1,000 to $50,000, an outlier bail of $100,000 was set for a 24-year-old female cashier who was booked on alleged child cruelty, likely to produce death or great bodily injury, according to booking logs.

One kidnapping suspect and one man who resisted an executive officer were arrested on Friday, and remain in police custody.

Nonviolent arrests included possession of a lead cane, possession of a firearm silencer, refusal to leave property, and two instances of receiving known stolen property, according to booking logs.
